I love Trey Burke but have never thought he was going to be a top 10, let alone a top 25 PG in the league. Don't get me wrong, I am not in a rush to sell him off, but I also think his value is more likely to go down this year than up. Also, lets not get carried away with talk of why would you give up on a lottery pick. Remember Chad Fords draft tier story... Trey was a tier 4 player last year which would have put him in the 20's in this years draft.
My reasoning: His shooting percentages I think have more to do with his athletic inadequacies than his shot, and as the Jazz compete more in a new offense teams will necessarily give greater efforts to beat the Jazz than they did last year. I don't think Trey's athleticism issuse are going to change going forward and as Exum starts to excel teams will start to view Burke as a backup, as will the Jazz. I think the league is still intrigued with his upside, but that will go down dramatically (and it will only take about 20 games for his value to evaporate) if Trey doesn't start shooting better, and continues to be a defensive liability... and both seem likely.
Conclusion: Sell as high as you can now, and start the Exum era.
Trade: Burke for McLemore #9 for last years #7.
Sacramento does because they deemed it necessary to drop a diminutive PG instead of giving him a huge pay day, but they still need a back up PG who can be a leader on that team, and has starter potential... right now all they have is a veteran back up who can start for a while. Also with the drafting of Stauskis they don't need another shooter as much and McLemore disappointed last year.
Why for the Jazz: We get a SG who has a pure stroke who struggled as I see it because he played for team of chuckers with no consistent culture or identity. He needs confidence is all, but that stroke is perfect. He is crazy long and athletic, and has the best stroke coming into the league since Ray Allen.
Next step after this is done: Just turn it over to Exum... give him the same time Burke got last year and let him develop with good ball handlers around him. Sign a quality vet like Earl Watson, and wait for it... possibly even signing Jimmer... Exum's size gives us that ability.
