I don't feel great about it. I think there's a good chance Mike Conley has a Rudy situation where father time hits him. When he first got to the Jazz, I don't think it was the huge adjustment that caused him to struggle as much as it was his health. If his body isn't right, which shouldn't surprise anyone at 35, he could fall off a cliff. We can always wait until he has value as an expiring contract, but that requires to run it back this year to some extent and that is something I personally cannot bear.

I'd be happy to do the Russell trade. He might not be a great fit, but neither is Conley for the same reasons. Russell can be a chucker, but he is also a terrific and willing passer and has made strides on the defensive end.

I'm worried on Mike too... this is the age where those guys fall off a cliff?

I think to have any meaningful change (outside of moving Don or Rudy) you have to move Mike or JC... If Mike's value is garbage and JC has some decent value to switch the roster up a bit.... then I just roll with Mike. He may hold it together for a little while longer.

IMO, trading Mike is a good idea for any direction so you've got to find a way to do it. If you want to tank, trade Mike. If you want to win now, trade Mike. If you want to retool with more youngish players, trade Mike. I don't think there's a place for him on this roster, no matter what the rest of the team looks like. It doesn't look like there are good options, but I hope Ainge can weasel his way into a deal.

I would bet on Mike being decent during the RS, so maybe he can remove the stink of his playoff performance, but even last year it was very clear that the only way he could get separation was with a big, illegal screen from Rudy. He had no juice to beat guys or create on his own. In the playoffs he'll get crushed on both ends again. Might as well move him for Russell if you can.
 
Washington just traded the package to Denver of KCP + Ish Smith to Denver. That was the package I was hoping the Jazz would get for Conley. A defensive wing + a veteran back-up PG.

Here’s what people around the league expect when it comes to the All-Star and multi-year Defensive Player of the Year:

The asking price will be steep and likely result in a prolonged negotiation that will tie up a team and hinder its ability to make other moves while trying to finish the deal with the Jazz’s Danny Ainge, a notoriously difficult negotiator.
The Bulls should be the odds-on favorite for what team Gobert is on next season, even including the Jazz.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are a considerable threat to one-up the Bulls as the Timberwolves continue to look for a veteran center to pair with Karl-Anthony Towns.

The Towns-Center pairing has been a surprise in conversations, but new President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly is convinced that the best way to maximize the roster is to put Towns next to a defensive force who can protect the rim and control the glass. Towns’ elite shooting means that you can still build an offense with enough spacing in a two-big lineup, which is a rarity in the NBA and provides counters to what the Wolves will see in the playoffs.

The Wolves’ best asset is D’Angelo Russell, whom multiple sources have said has been actively shopped by Minnesota in recent weeks. Russell shrunk in the playoffs against switch coverage and has always been an unsteady player, further bringing his value into question.

However, if the two primary suitors for a Gobert trade are the Bulls and Wolves, is Russell better than Nikola Vucevic and filler? This is why some executives speculate – and I stress this, speculate – that eventually Chicago will involve Patrick Williams in the deal.

Without Williams, the Bulls’ offer may not be the best on the table. Whether that’s posturing from Utah or not, that’s the consensus. As is typical with these types of negotiations, there’s a standoff element with both sides resolved not to blink.

It really seems like Chicago is moving on but maybe that is posturing. If Patrick Williams struggles to start the season his trade value TANKS. He is theoretically a good 3 and D big wing. If he doesn't show improvement his the upside premium on his trade value takes a big hit.

If we did a Russell deal I'd look to move JC. I'd also try to steal Nowell from Minny. I think he could be a diamond... somewhat in plain sight. His per36 numbers are huge and he's young.

We aren’t getting Russell for Conley unless you’re talking about a Gobert deal.

No was talking Conley. His name has been out there a lot... they don't want to extend him and it gets weird if he's unhappy cuz of Towns. I could see them doing a Russell for Conley and filler deal. Mike is more of a winning complementary player and would fit with Ant and Towns. Gives them an adult in the room.

I’d honestly be very shocked if we were able to pull that off.
 
If we're committed to retooling and we can get more for JC than Mike, then that might be ok as long as Mike is ok with coming off the bench.

JC is very unique to our roster in that he can get his shots off in different places on the court than anyone else. That becomes valuable in the playoffs when our primary ways of scoring are hedged off. He'll also likely go through another shooting slump this year and activistly cost us games.

I wouldn't Mike is more efficient and the volume ain't all that different. He would fit better with that roster. I would kind of hate it for us tbh. The cap flexibility next year would be nice.

Conley for Lopez, Hill and 1st works

Bucks then use their taxpayer MLE on Claxton fill the void at center. Claxton gives them better chance to play more at the level. They also weren't terrible when Lopez was injured.

Jazz do it because Lopez can shoot and defend and they get a pick.

Jazz can then trade Gobert for non-centers.

What are the odds we acquire Hill and he gets another big toe injury?
 
Dealing Rudy to Minny does nothing for me. Russell doesn't help this roster.

With what's out there, the Bulls deal is the best of a poor haul IMO. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the FO decides to let Hardy and scheme tuning run back the pairing of Rudy/DM for another year vs. trading him for unappealing packages.
