Olowokandi had similar hype. They see someone who is a physical specimen do things guys that size shouldn't be able to or just normally don't do and the hype train begins. Soon the hyperbole sets in. "This kid could be the best prospect this year." Turns into "this kid could be the best prospect since LeBron". Or whatever. But all too often the hype doesn't pan out.

I don't understand why you are hating on him so much. He isn't even remotely close to a finished product but the physical package could be all time great. He doesn't stink offensively he is inconsistent on that end but shows plenty of potential. I view him as a Ralph Sampson type talent and Ralph Sampson in this era would be a top 5 player.

Lmao. Ralph Sampson produced and was a 3 time player of the year in college.

This kid has no accolades to this point.

No way Sampson is a top 5 player now. Maybe at his absolute peak, but he peaked in his 3rd season or so then went downhill from there. But as a complementary piece a player like that would be great.

He suffered an injury which completely changed his career. Not sure about top five but he could certainly be a top ten.

Victor's free throw rate has been 62 to 67%. He doesn't project to be a great three point shooter. In fact he projects to be a bad shooter. In my mind he is a less good, but taller Ben Simmons. Is that the number one pick? I get it, he is tantalizing. But does he have flaws that would need to be overcomed? Yes, he does and he should be fourth in the draft.

I mean... what kinds of accolades do you want him to have at age 18? He's played extremely well against international competition, he passes the eye test, he passes the measurements and athleticism tests and he outplayed Chet Holmgren at the FIBA World Cup U19 finals while being 2 years younger than him. He looked every bit the no. 1 pick he's being projected to be in that tournament. Now, is he ready to win tomorrow in the NBA? No(and mainly physically). But you are not drafting a player like that for tomorrow. You are drafting him for the next 15 years. I hope people realize that what Doncic was doing is NOT the norm for young prospects coming from Europe.

BTW his defensive stats are pretty good even in the Euroleague. IMO he needs to build up some strength in order to be an effective offensive player against physically developed adults.

Maybe. I still think that is a stretch. Top 20, sure.

KAT is questionable as a top 10 player. Right behind him at 11 is Anthony Davis. This also does not include anyone like Harden or Mitchell or Booker or Chris Paul or Tatum, etc. I have a hard time slotting Sampson in above many of them. Could be wrong.
 
Even if victor wembanyama never figures out how to be a great offensive player (which I expect him to figure it out personally), he will be an extremely elite defender in the NBA.

I see very little bust potential unless you are expecting him to be a top 10 player of all time. The dude is known as a hard worker. He isnt a softy.

I dont get the venom for this kid, but this post is just plain false.

Both Luka's 17 yo and 18 yo seasons in Euroleague he averaged about 8pts, 3ast, 4 boards. These were seasons 2 and 3 in Euroleague btw.

Victor is 6.5pts, 4boards and 2blks in his first season.

I'm not claiming he's a better prospect than Bron but, brother, you seem to have some odd venom for this kid.

For the record, i think he will be VERY good.

I like Scoot and there are a **** ton of wings after Wemby and Scoot... so top 3-4 and you get your pick of those guys too. Maybe you don't get the superstar but an AS caliber wing goes a long way in helping the rebuild. Get lucky with one of the other picks and you are cooking with fish oil with all the picks we should have stacked up.

Wemby is kind of a risky and weird prospect. There just aren't dudes like him so there aren't great comps. Staying healthy is something I'd worry about, but I think he can be wiry strong like KD.

Anytime a guy this unique comes out there will be wide variety of opinions. If he stays healthy I think he's a super rich man's version of the Zinger. He could be so much more though if he is like a Rudy Gobert/KD mashup.

We only have a 14% shot at him. Would suck if he's the next Greg Oden... but we'd be fortunate to land a prospect like him. I think the only way he is a BUST is if he doesn't stay healthy.

K, well then put him in the same tier of prospect. His rating as a prospect of that tier is the norm, not infrequent.

And when you have a ton of swings, you swing for the fences. If the Jazz are lucky enough to get #1, they should draft a guy with MVP/finals MVP potential, and if it doesn't work out then just keep trying.

This is the fundamental flaw with the 1-year tank idea. The odds are always against hitting even "just" an all-star with even a high pick.

And if Ralph Sampson had current sports medicine and training his career could've been dramatically different. Guys can come back from an ACL tear in less than a year and back then it basically ended your career. Embiid would've been Sam Bowie.

From my perspective, if the Jazz get Wemby, they should sit him for 20+ games and focus mostly on getting his body and his shooting right. It's an easy way to tank in '24, but it's probably mostly just the right way to proceed with a prospect with maybe the widest range of outcomes of anyone ever. Anyone not concerned about his knees/ankles/feet is out of their mind.
