Training Camp Notes

Nothing matters until games. Even the junkie in me has a hard time with training camp updates.

Come on. Training camp gets the players ready for the games. But I understand where you're coming from. I can barely stand watching summer league games myself.

While those summer league game might be hard to watch sometimes I sure did miss them last year with the lock out. I need my basketball

I like training camp excitement as much as anyone. But until the games get played, hearing that Tinsley is killing in practice doesn't move the needle for me.

I know it was just a joke, but Kanter had the worst assist rate of the entire NBA according to Hollinger (0.3/36 minutes = 1 assist every 3 games playing 36 minutes/game). Frightening!

He's not that bad at assists. Once he stops thinking, he'll see the court better and act with instinct. I've seen some abilities like running 3 pointers and fastbreak dimes of him that he never showed in the NBA, probably coz he's so afraid that management will think he's a bust coz he can't score in the post. He'll get better at showing those parts of his games.

Weak. Give it time and you'll become a true addict. I watched everything I can. Heck I watch college basketball consistently so I'll be prepared for the NBA draft.

So far I'm hearing good things about almost everyone in terms of "Oh wow, this guy looks like has improved so and so" besides Derrick Favors. Slightly worried he is going to have no improvement offensively.

i have the same feeling, now he is not in project starting 5. i can imagine that SAP was better at camp but we can't afford to piss off DF and start to think of another team.
My opinion is- TY Play better player, but Derick HAVE to get MUCH MORE minutes.

I think Favors will be disappointed, but not completely pissed off if he doesn't start. His thing, right now, is about getting more PT. That's what he said in an interview this summer (can't find it right now). He knows he should be starting, but he's aware of the situation.

I think this is really on KOC and Lindsey, more than Ty. Something needs to be resolved by mid-season at worst. If Millsap really wants to stick around, he has to be satisfied with a role that will still have him getting 30 mins, but off the bench. If he's not satisfied with that solution, then he needs to be traded. Or you could turn it around and ask Derrick if he'd be ok with splitting his time between the 5 and 4. If that's the case, then you trade Al and have Derrick as the starting center, sliding over to PF when Millsap sits.

His magnificence is a given.

Defensively yes, but will he continue to allow the likes of Matt Bonner to guard him? Everything I've seen from him offensively suggest he has very average offensive feel, so he will have to work really hard to ever be a good offensive player, and will probably never be a great one.

Every time I watch Dwight, I'm unimpressed by hos offensive game, yet he manages to get his points. I'm not comparing Derrick to Dwight; Howard is a superstar. But I can see Favors being an 18-10 player even with limited offensive moves.

This is true, but Favors doesn't have quite the physical dominance that Howard does.

That's why I've put his stats below that of Dwight. I think Derrick can get to 18/10 just by playing 10 more mins and getting a few more chances and O-rebounds and put-backs.

Just nitpicking here, but I'd guess he averages more than 10 rebounds.

Yeah, but he's already a better FT and jump shooter.

I'm hoping Favors has worked on his offensive game too, but he's got a decent foundation of skills. And like MoTown said, he'll probably put up good numbers anyway, ala Dwight. There's definitely reason to be optimistic.

Good posts on Favors everyone. Once this 16-round fantasy draft ends I'll have to spend more time in the Jazz forum.
