Trey Burke is my new whipping boy

36.7% and 31% a third of the way into the season. And he's not really much of passing PG at 5 APG. Pretty much pointless.
 
I was really happy when we drafted Trey...maybe its because our PG situation was really bad/old with Tinsley/Watson. But he has been frustrating this season. His poor shooting bothers me but its not what makes me upset the most. I hate how he cannot fight thru a screen. And I really really hate that when he runs the pick n roll he seems to get trapped or stuck. I hope he improves cause I like him, but he has struggled mightily.
 
I cannot blame Trey too much for this. Yes, he shoots too much in too many games. But he does play smart and he plays with effort I think. He is just fundamentally without the physical skills needed for the NBA and Jazz management should have seen that. I heard the radio guys interview the NBA scout last NOv-Dec and he basically said the same thing, too short and too slow.

I actually do blame Trey for being too short and too slow. Not sure who else to blame, tbh.
 
Glad we've moved on from Kwame Kanter to Kwame Burke.


Burke should bring his percentages up to 41/33 by the end of the season-- my prediction.

He should ​have started with those numbers. That's my prediction.
 
His numbers on offense are underwhelming but I'm not that concerned yet - I think they eventually come around to some measure of respectability. His lack of defensive presence is what I find alarming. If you're a 6'1" (allegedly) and under 200 pound starter you need to be a ****ing dynamo on defense to survive. Burke plays defense like he's waiting to play offense.

He'll have to average around 43/34 for the remainder of the season. And that's if he plays every single remaining game. It's a tall order.

In all honesty, I hope that they keep him in the starting lineup for the rest of the season.

A.) His trade value will be increased if the Jazz are more successful down the stretch. Winning makes everything look better, and there's more winning from this group down the road. Plus, I think that a trade on Draft Day might be more valuable than one at the upcoming deadline.

B.) Dante Exum is NOT ready to start and it makes no sense to burn assets trying to get a starting level point guard to replace Burke, only to be a placeholder until Dante is ready. Might as well just keep Burke until you can get something for him, or until Dante is ready to start.

C.) Every single young player (including Burke) has shown development and improvement under Quin Snyder. I fully expect Trey (who I've never been a big fan of) to continue to improve. I hoping that more minutes for Dante down the stretch will really push Trey to elevate his game and force him to play better defense and make better decisions.

D.) Decisions this year should not be knee jerk reactions to losing games. Development and improvement are the key goals. Trey needs to play to learn and he needs to learn to get better. I have faith in Snyder, and I want Trey to do well. That means patience on my part.

I agree with pretty much all of this.

At this stage, we could either watch Trey play crappy or Dante play crappy as neither would be a "top starter" in the league now. It isn't very likely Trey ever will be, but that being said, he probably will make a fantastic bench player in a few years. He's careful with the ball, can make a big shot every once in a while, and will certainly get better with shot selection in general. I don't think you can whip him for being what he is now, and trading him on his rookie contract now for another eventual whipping boy won't make things any better.

Although I don't feel quite so strongly , time is running out on him. Do people realize he has yet to average even 40% shooting for 1 month in his career thus far. I have him a pass because very few rookie point guards shoot a good percentage but things are not improving. Iwould love to know his shooting % on uncontested jumpers because it seems like he misses an amazing number of wide open jumpers

Considering how much DeMarre Carroll improved as a shooter under Snyder's coaching, I'm willing to back off and give him a chance to elevate his game. If he could just shoot better, or defer more it would have a positive impact on the team and increase his value. I'm okay with the idea of trading him, but nori till Dante is ready to take over (unless there's a great deal to be made and Burke needs to be included to pull it off.)
 
I called him the new CJ Miles a month ago and almost got chastised for it. Welcome to the club
