Trey Burke: Sink or Swim?

The majority want to throw him to the wolves. I still like him today as a back up at least. I just want to give him this offseason to improve.
I dont see the harm in it. Give him until the all-star break to show solid improvement or we go with other options. The great thing is we already have other assets. Neto and Cotton. I think we should enjoy having all this young talent, and let the cards fall where they may. Yes, I think Burke still has a chance to be our starter, and be the leader of this team. Right now Im leaning thats hes a lifetime back up in this league, but hes still got a chance to do more. Hes only had two years. I'm willing to give him a little more time. Although for us his time is running out because we have the assets behind him to use. I think Burke is going to have a great offseason, and make it very hard for us to let him go next year.

He will make a strong argument to keep him here, which will increase his value as a trading piece where we move him to the Timberwolves. Prophecy fortold.

I've said this the moment we got Cotton on our roster, Cotton looks to be quicker, faster in the open court, totally unselfish and his 3pt shooting seems solid. He also has good PG instinct, something Burke seems to lack (he'll shoot when he's supposed to pass 1/2 the time).

With Burks coming back (and coming off the bench as the 6th man), I don't really see a need for Burke anymore. I do think Cotton can be that backup PG for us off the bench. He seems to be ready to go.

With Burke, I think it's more of a mental thing, his approach to the game. Does he want to concentrate on setting up his teammates and playing defense, or does he want to continue to be a chucker?

x2 without any hesitation on my part. Nothing against Burke, but Cotton is ready. He's only going to get better, not regress, with time. He flips the teams pace on it's head when he's on the floor. He's mature as a PG right now in comparison to Burke. As with every other step in Cotton's bb life, the doubts usually outweigh confidence in him. But I think I know different. He will be a good backup, somebody you'll be glad to see coming off the bench. Someone you will have confidence in when he steps on the court. He has always proven doubters wrong. Always. If he can beat out Burke for backup, by effort or by trade, there will not be a point next season where Jazz fans are saying "put Cotton on the bench, he stinks!" That is not going to happen.

Cotton is returning to Providence to be worked out by God Shammgod prior to Summer League. And Shammgod will be telling him "that job is your's. Your foot's in the door, Bryce, and you and I know that's all you needed. That job is going to be your's. Now let's get to work". Mark my word. You keep Cotton on your roster and you will be saying " man, am I glad we kept him!". As sure as the sun rises in the east, the Jazz will never regret putting the ball in Bryce's hands. Doubts are understandable, but they will all be put to rest one day. I want that to happen in Utah with a coach I think the world of right now.

We've never allowed Burke to play to his strengths. He has been asked to do too much. He isn't good enough to do what we've asked him to do. I think he will be a lot better next year with a healthy Burks and improvement from Exum and Hood. He can play within himself more. I think he will be just fine next year.

I'm not ready to throw him to the wolves quite yet, but I can't picture Trey being the starting PG going forward. I still think he's the best option as the primary backup PG. I like what I've seen from Cotton, but it's too small of a sample size late in the season for me to call him better than Burke yet. As for the offseason I thought Trey would have a great offseason and come back much better for this season, but it didn't work out that way. My question is, does anybody think there's a chance that the Jazz won't pick up Burke's fourth-year option? The deadline to do so is in October, before the season starts, right?

I still think he has the potential to become a starter some day, but the acquisition of Exum & development of Hood (not to mention the return of Burks) seem to have made it highly unlikely that it happens here. Imo, even tho his trade value is likely at it's lowest, he is more valuable to this team as a trade chip than he would be as our backup PG (which has become one of the easier positions to fill due to the influx of talent at that position). Drafting & starting Exum has shown that he is the priority at PG. Imo, he would benefit greater by having a veteran mentor as his backup rather than another young prospect in Burke who is also attempting to find his place in the league. Unless he can't be traded for a reasonable return (which is possible), I think Burke is best served being used to move up in the draft or fill another hole such as backup C.

I'd love for Burke to fix his issues. But I am just not sure if he can. I say trade him but I'd love for Burke to prove me wrong.

I'd trade him if we get value... Like a first round pick in the 20-25 range value. If he ever takes a jump in production it will be this year. I think he's a hard worker and can get better... I don't think he's the greatest fit for us right now... We kind of need a steady vet to come off the bench and help is through the lows that Exum goes through.

If not there is no reason to trade him for nothing.

Swim?

He will walk on the water next season. 42/37%, FG & 3P%

I agree. It will click for him. He will come off the bench, he won't have the opportunity to dominate the ball so much, and it will help him. Having Burks/Hood handling the ball more will help Burke out a lot.

Is Burke eligible for the summer league? It couldn't hurt.

Obviously, he's not with us long-term. But unless we could get fair value for him in a trade we'd be crazy not to keep him for at least next season. He's on a dirt cheap rookie deal and he's still an above-average backup PG.

We have two team-option years remaining on his deal, right? Something like that? I'm fine with keeping him in the fold for 1.5 seasons and then trading him (if he's worth anything) or just letting him walk at the end of it.

I've bashed him as much as anyone, but we gave up two draft picks to get him. Let him try and stay on the island.

If he can improve then by all means stay. I'd love for him to get it together and be a Jazzman for a long time. But he has major work to do.

I just don't think Burke has a lot going for himself. He's undersized, yet not fast and not a good shooter. He's not suddenly going to get fast and I don't think a player goes from shooting as bad as he does to being a good shooter. He might improve his shooting but to what degree? His ceiling is being an undersized, slow, almost average shooter who is selfish and has a tendency to chuck.

Sink.
