Trump reverses migrant separation policy

Obama did not receive nearly as much scrutiny as Trump does. It's breaking news every time Trump says something stupid on Twitter. And that happens every day. Imagine if Trump was found to have established a "secret court" that rubber stamps whatever covert military action that the administration deems necessary. Haha. The fiasco.

It just so happens that Obama was a well educated, well spoken, and competent politician. While Trump is a tabloid superstar.

That said, I am glad of the opposition Trump is facing. I don't want a future directed by an ignorant nationalist agenda. I just wish people were a little more even-handed.

This post makes it sound like trump is getting what he deserves (acts like an idiot all the time and gets called out for it all the time) and Obama got what he deserved (plenty of criticism but due to the fact that he isn’t an idiot and was competent, he got much less criticism than trump).

I agree.

That's really sad about your friend. Who invented the lottery system? I guess it's to give everyone a fair chance... but who said it has to be like that?

Or maybe have BOTH a merit system for qualified people, as well as a lottery quota?
Or neither

How about a "not a criminal system"

The quota is the problem

Give me a break.

Obama didn’t go one day without criticism.

Remember the Grey Poupon? Or how about his first day of school speech that was boycotted by right wingers? The tan suit? The coffee salute? The Saudi Arabian bow? Or his wife’s sleeves?

It’s as if 30 percent of this country lives in its own alt reality.

Huh?

Ignorant (white) nationalist agenda

Why the **** should we be even handed?

It makes you wonder why the media never brought it to large attention.

That's easy. Clinton, Bush, and Obama never referred to immigrants as infestations, as rapists, etc. They downplayed their actions and distracted the media with other shiny toys. By contrast, the Trump administration has made this behavior a centerpiece. The media followed where they pointed.

For Trump, cruelty is an indicator of strength, compassion a sign of weakness. That's his message, that's what his core supporters, his base, believes, and that's what was behind the clear as can be message on his wife's jacket. "I really don't care. Do U? was Trump saying to his base "I really don't care about breaking up the families of undocumented refugees. Do U?" After all, he describes them as "infesting" the country. He dehumanizes them. They have been the scapegoat he wants his followers to focus their anger on. From the day he announced he was running, to the day his wife wore that message for his base on her jacket. This is what authoritarian demagogues do. The dynamic in place today in America is the same dynamic used by cruel and evil demagogues in other times and places. It's not hard to play on people's fears and angers. You just need someone willing to do so. We have that person in our own time and place. It's our President, and his approval rating is at its highest point.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...immigration-policy-is-still-incredibly-cruel/

"But no one should be fooled about what Trump is doing. His ideology and goals have not changed. He’s still vilifying immigrants to charge up his angry base. He still wants not just to stop illegal immigration but to cut back on legal immigration as well. And his impulses are as cruel as ever. Right now he and his advisers, particularly those such as Stephen Miller who have long sought to make America whiter, are not retreating. They’re devising ways to make immigration policy as brutal as they can get away with, even if they’ve been forced to take a small step backward....

.....And we have to understand that from the beginning, the cruelty of these policies was the whole point. The administration wanted to deter people from seeking asylum by showing them how horrifically they and their children would be treated if they tried to come to the United States. Trump, who describes immigrants in terms we use for insects and vermin (they “pour into and infest our Country,” he tweeted), has over and over again made clear his own xenophobic and racist beliefs about them. He also knows that his core supporters share those beliefs, and he seeks at every opportunity to use antipathy toward immigrants to reinforce their bond with him."

@Siro gets it.

Until more people are like Siro, not much is going to change. My side is right, your side is wrong. No accountability.

I totally remember the day that someone called Obama's daughter a **** and still got to keep her show.
Do you remember the day that someone said Obama should 'suck on his machine gun' and got to sit on the board of the NRA? How about when that same person called Obama a 'chimpass punk' who should he hanged?

And let's not pretend that using a mean word when critizing Ivanka, who is an adult woman and more importantly a white house advisor responsible for its policies, is the same as going after Obama's kids.

I've always been a fiscally right moderate who thought Bush haters and Obama haters were ridiculous. They were flawed/ mediocre presidents and decent human beings.

Trump is altogether different. History will judge Trump and his enablers/ apologists harshly. There will be some interesting conversations between kids and Grandpop when they discover the online photos of Pop Pol wearing a MAGA hat.

Who said that? I'm googling it and can't seem to find anything.
People who attack anyone's kids in spite of them are cowards. Peter Fonda called for the kidnapping of Barron Trump so he could be raped or molested. That's sick and disgusting. The fact that his movie with Sony is still being released shows a huge double standard with the left. Roseanne is insane and made the dumbest tweet you can make in 2018. Although, she claims she would have never made the tweet if she actually knew VJ was black - I actually believe her on this, because when I googled VJ for the first time after the incident, I didn't realize either. However, how dumb can a public figure be to tweet anything like these two? There are absolutely no excuses. You don't call anyone a god damn ape. You don't slut shame the president's kids. You don't attack Barron cause his dad is a POS. What the **** is wrong with people?

I'm getting more disappointed in bi-partisanship everyday. We live in such a great country and people act absolutely insane and hysterical. Everytime I read the MSM I can't help but think of Jake Gyllenhaal and Night Crawler. Click bait to further the divide. CNN is insane. Fox News is ridiculous. People who wear glasses to only see their political affiliation's side are sheeple. This is not to say we are without problems, but the way the internet has made people is ****ing crazy.

The US isn't that bad of a place. Wish we could be proud of something we should and stop stereotyping or generalizing everything.

Hard to say honestly. She's the First Lady with a retinue of aides whose job it is to take mind of her wardrobe choices, especially for public appearances. She's also got a background in fashion so it's hard to believe she just grabbed this jacket off the hanger without giving it any thought.
And one that costs like $34 when she's known to wear super expensive clothing.

It is obviously much easier to complain than to govern. Trump is calling on his party to delay immigration reform until after mid-terms. Ugh!

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/poli...wmakers-to-drop-immigration-effort/ar-AAz0nfp

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump urged Republican lawmakers on Friday to drop their efforts to pass comprehensive immigration legislation until after the November elections, which he hopes will boost the party's majority in Congress.

Trump, faced with a public outcry over his policy that separated children from their migrant parents at the U.S. border with Mexico, tried to refocus the immigration debate on Congress in a series of early morning posts on Twitter.

Despite Republican control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the party's slim 51-49 majority in the latter chamber makes some Democratic support necessary to pass most legislation. Trump has often chafed at this, which also leaves his party vulnerable to dissent by just one or two Republican senators.

"Elect more Republicans in November and we will pass the finest, fairest and most comprehensive Immigration Bills anywhere in the world," Trump said on Twitter.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November. Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!" he said.

In fact, many analysts say the party could suffer losses this November, when all 435 House seats and a third of the 100-member Senate will be up for grabs.

Trump bowed to intense pressure on Wednesday and signed an order ending the separation of children from their families while parents are prosecuted for crossing the border illegally, which had caused uproar at home and abroad. He said then he still wanted Congress to pass a more comprehensive immigration bill.

The House on Thursday rejected a bill favored by conservatives that would have halted the practice of splitting up families and addressed a range of other immigration issues.

It makes you wonder why the media never brought it to large attention. It was reported on, sparingly, so clearly people knew about it. It seems to point towards a large bias towards/against certain people. Then you get people blaming all of it on Trump, even showing photos from 2014. Which yeah, we should blame Trump for a lot of this...but making it seem like he’s the only reason for it, that’s just not progressing things. It’s why the left lost. Y’all still can’t figure it out.
The media has brought it up before. It did not gain as much attention but the main problem is that this is new and different. This isnt some law that has already been around and happening for a long time. There is a lot of incorrect information about that being sent around.

There is no federal law about detaining kids. Sessions policy change is what started all of this. Yes, some bad things had been happening but things drastically changed with this new policy. Yes, the way things were processed is that parents with kids could be prosecuted and sent to jail. If they had kids those kids were not allowed to be jailed and would be taken and placed with human and health services who tried to get the kids back to relatives. But and the big but... This rarely happened. Families were rarely prosecuted before the policy of Sessions came out that was 0 tolerance. Suddenly thousands of kids were being separated which is a drastic difference between what was happening and what is happening.

The 1997 law change that people refer to as a democrat law and the problem is vastly different than this. It was created to help get kids out of custody and back to relatives while parents were being tried. This law was also voted in by republicans and was a collaboration between Clinton and the republican majority on the senate.

There was a brief period where another policy change happened and 2005 more kids were being separated. Congress found out about this policy and quickly acted to reverse it and made sure to use their space of about 100 beds to try and keep families together. But again this was a very small number of people, unlike the large number that has been happening.

So there is a very good reason for the outcry now and why it did not exist before. This is new and different. More kids were separated from their families in the past couple months than during all of the previous presidencies of Obama, Bush and Clinton.

Trump and his people are to blame for this and their actions are despicable. I am glad that he has reversed course and this and I hope that people continue to report and bring attention to this issue because more needs to be done.

I remember Obama’s being criticized for that..... along with almost everything else in the world.

Remember “Thanks Obama” ?
Yeah, its weird the people think Obama was not criticized. He was attacked so much that this joke was born. A lot of what he was attacked for was silly and not accurate. While he made plenty of mistakes most of what he was attacked for was silly things like not having a birth certificate. Funny enough is that Trump lead a lot of the silly attacks and got attention and popularity for it from Republicans.

Personally I voted for Obama the first term and was very disappointed with him, he let down the middle class he promised to help out. Although he is much much better than Trump.

It is interesting that conservatives now say that Obama didn't get blamed enough. Apparently they were not watching Fox News then.

What Siro pointed out in the post you quoted is that trump acts like an idiot all the time and gets called out for it.
Obama acted like an idiot a lot less and still received a lot of criticism but not nearly as much as trump.

Do you think the person who acts like an idiot all the time should get the same amount or less criticism than the one who doesn’t act like an idiot all the time? If so, why?
