You can have it now.
Actually, YOU have to pay for the vacation (or your parents). Not sure exactly what the monthly charge is now, though. When I went, each missionary paid for all his own expenses. Since the cost of living varies so much (i.e. European missions >>>> $ than South American missions, the LDS Church decided to normalize the monthly costs. Each missionary pays the same amount no matter where he/she goes. How does this work? If I convert to Mormonism, can I get a 2 year paid vacation?
Hopefully spy breaks the mold of the jazzfanz poster who goes on their mission and never returs to jazzfanz.
Damn, a legend is leaving us. Thanks for the avatar!
Wait, is the whole 2 year mission work the thing where those dudes ride bikes around and go house to house talking to people?
yes.
If you are lucky enough be allowed to have a bike.
So, is that all they really do? There has to be other parts to the mission, right? Or is it pretty much just getting people listen to you talk about Mormonism?

You are there to build up the LDS faith. I spent about half my time doing things that were not directly preaching the gospel. I did hundreds of service projects. Building homes, fences, clearing fields, cleaning, chopping trees, hauling water, feeding animals...
I tend to see a patern of missionaries focusing to much on converting new members. They miss the chance to build up existing member or bringing inactive ones back to the church. More true break thrus will come from those that live in those areas.
But you are focused on building and expanding the church 24/7/365 for two years straight.
