Actually, YOU have to pay for the vacation (or your parents). Not sure exactly what the monthly charge is now, though. When I went, each missionary paid for all his own expenses. Since the cost of living varies so much (i.e. European missions >>>> $ than South American missions, the LDS Church decided to normalize the monthly costs. Each missionary pays the same amount no matter where he/she goes.

Don't worry, I know I'll be back on Jazzfanz. I can't stand talking to casual Jazz fans....I need people who actually know something about basketball. Plus, dal and orange will be writing me, so I'll be in contact with some Jazzfanz while I'm gone, in a way.

So, is that all they really do? There has to be other parts to the mission, right? Or is it pretty much just getting people listen to you talk about Mormonism?

its actully a really great exp. I went to Fort worth Texas. i had a blast!! who knew riding a bike, knocking on doors, having doors slamed in your face and talking about God and Jesus could be so much fun. It really is a blast though!! I learned more in those two years about people and God then i could assume some people learn in a lifetime.
You are there to build up the LDS faith. I spent about half my time doing things that were not directly preaching the gospel. I did hundreds of service projects. Building homes, fences, clearing fields, cleaning, chopping trees, hauling water, feeding animals...
I tend to see a patern of missionaries focusing to much on converting new members. They miss the chance to build up existing member or bringing inactive ones back to the church. More true break thrus will come from those that live in those areas.
But you are focused on building and expanding the church 24/7/365 for two years straight.
Didn't someone also say this was self-financed? How do people manage to afford not working for 2 years and afford the trip and cost of living?
