Underrated Actors/Actresses

I remember someone starting a thread like this on the old site and for me Gary Oldman takes the cake here, that is unless he's considered too "out there" or respected already.

That said, I want to give major props to another guy who's either crushed or been seamlessly strong in every role I can recall seeing him in. The 25th Hour, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Saving Private Ryan, True Grit, The Green Mile, The Kennedys. I know he was supposedly excellent in 61 and 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story as well.

Jeffrey Wright. That guy is AMAZING, but I never hear him talked about, ever. Just go see Angels in America if you don't believe me (although, admittedly, almost everyone was great in Angels... that was the best cast for any mini-series in my memory, and not just because of Al Pacino and Meryl Streep).

The funny thing is that the beginning of his IMDB profile actually reads: "Quite possibly the most underrated and underexposed actor of his caliber and generation, Jeffrey Wright's undeniable talent and ability to successfully bring to life any role he undertakes is on a par with the most praised and revered A-list actors in the business." So apparently someone agrees with me.

In the last thread like this (might have been before the crash, I don't remember) I mentioned Brad Dourif, who was Billy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Doc Cochran in Deadwood, and Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings, just to name a few roles. The guy still impresses the hell out of me.

I don't believe so. He won a bunch of stuff for Angels... a Golden Globe and an Emmy, plus a Tony for his stage performance. He also got Best Supporting Actor Award for Shaft from the Toronto Film Critics Association. But nothing for Syriana, I don't think...

I suppose I'll add in Glenn Close, just because I find it shocking that she hasn't won an Oscar yet. Especially for Dangerous Liasons... Jodie Foster stole that one from her. Actually, Glenn Close in Dangerous Liasons might be my favorite performance by an actress ever, period. At least I can't think of a better one off the top of my head.

He's in a bear suit and punches a woman. I fail to see how you don't recognize the greatness of that.
