What's new

Utah Beer Festival

My wife is extremely sensitive to heat and especially heat and intense sunshine. VIP was a lifesaver for her last year. She chilled in the VIP lounge and I'd bounce in and out with samples. This year should be a little better because the fair grounds will have tons more shade and I think they'll use some of the buildings hopefully. Keep in mind this isn't St George though, so maybe 90s outside.

But if you don't want to be too hot do the VIP thing. Exclusive samples and food pairings and pro brewers taking about the beer.

Oh, Broncster, is your wife in a commercial for the aquarium?

I'm also not a ... Heat-intolerant person.
Will try to be there. Thanks for the heads up.

It's worth mentioning, with the lines you can probably get more samples between 1pm-2pm as you'll be able to get from 2pm-4pm, so if you want to load up on samples the early bird or VIP thing is worth it. Around 2:30 the lines started getting long last year. Hopefully the wristbands will help, but they still have to open and pour from bottles for anything over 4%abv.

Yes, that is her! That commercial is airing everywhere. Her and I are also in the RSL save the water commercial that started popping up this week. She has been getting cast a lot lately.
What are you guys doing in the commercials? I want to pick you out and brag that I knew you when.

Haha, my wife does a lot of acting. She is in a bunch of local stuff. The aquarium commercial she is the woman who says she loves the spotted leopard. In the real RSL commercials i am the one watering the lawn that gets scared of the lightning. She is the one fixing her bike.

Don't think I've seen the new RSL one. How cool!

Did you get the time after you RSVP'd? I volunteered to work overtime that day and I don't get off until 6:30

They've got the festival map up.

So I mentioned earlier that this year all beer will cost 1-2 tokens. It did say that on their site. Now it says 4%abv or below will be 1 token and anything above that will be 2-4 tokens. They claim again this year, like they did last year, that 90% of the 2-4 token beers will cost 2 tokens. I'd say less than 20% of the 2-4 token beers last year cost 2 tokens. It was 3 and 4 for almost everything. In fact, there were many 4%abv beers that cost 2 tokens and some even 3 tokens. Any real specialty beers or anything 8%abv or more was pretty much 4 tokens. Epic didn't have anything for less than 3 tokens.

I don't mean to bitch, but getting a pour into a 5oz sample cup means you're getting about 4oz of beer, so many of the beers would essentially cost $9-$12 per bottle in an event that you have to pay to enter. I want to try lots of samples. So I figure besides the two $50 VIP tickets I bought I'll load up my wristband with another $50 to spend on samples with the expectation that I might have to add even more. I could spend the night at one of the nice beer bars (The Bayou, The Beerhive, Beer Bar, to name a few) and spend far less and have a nice selection of beers.

Anyway, I'm happy with the venue change and I think the RFID wristbands are really gonna speed things up. I noticed a few local breweries have two booths, a 4%abv booth and a "High Point" booth. That's smart. You can serve samples on draft at the 4% booth and keep the lines really short without making people who want those samples wait behind people who are having their sample poured out of a bottle.

I just added the beer fest web app. It lists all the beers and their token amount. It looks like all the 4 percent beers are 1 token and lots are two tokens. There are way less 3 and 4 token beers than last year but they are still around. I'm jumping in an RV right after beer fest to head off to burning man, it should be an interesting 24 hours.

That's awesome! I've got the app but didn't see that it listed token prices. I think this year is gonna be a lot better than last year.

Just finished helping set up and it's going to be much better. VIP area looks nice, more breweries, more shade, more food vendors, more open space, better weather and generally much more organized.

Still seeing a few breweries that can't bring themselves to only charge 2 tokens for a 4 oz sample. Rouge, for instance. And one of their beers is around 5% and nothing too complicated, but they want 3 tokens.

It's cool. I'm gonna have fun.

SKA gets my vote for best token price. They have an 8% for two tokens and a 10%ipa for 3 tokens. They have the friendliest pricing I've seen. Be sure to show them some love.

Ska is a great brewery in general. I really like their stuff and they seem cool. Rogue makes decent stuff but they overcharge big time for everything. They have such a well known name and make weird beers and mark them way up. There are about 5-10 beers I have not tried so I am excited.
