What's new

Utah is now a top 15 team according to Hollinger's power rankings

If Exum is a top 150 player in 2 years, we are in the Hunt
If Exum is a top 75 player in two years, We are absolutely a playoff team.
If Exum is a top 30 player in 2-3 years ( Not likely imo. Hayward might be top 30), we are a contender. #WaitingOnDante

FWIW,
VORP says Hayward is the 15th best player in the league.
BsPM says he is 29th.
most metrics have him between 15 and 30. Pretty safe to say he is a top 30 player.

Id say the Jazz were in danger of developing a losing culture after the all star break last year.

Not buying it. A losing culture suggests your players are good enough to win, but can't win because they've been mentally conditioned to losing all the time. Just because you have a team that isn't very good and mails it in down the stretch of a losing season, doesn't mean you have a losing culture.

The whole losing culture thing was beaten to death when GS was tanking, and low and behold look at them now. Most of the time when fans blame a losing culture, its simply bad management of personnel, or missing on draft picks, which can happen regardless of rebuilding strategy. Brooklyn, Phoenix and Denver have all been operating the way some Jazz fans would prefer Utah to operate, by, you know, maintaining a winning culture. I'd rather be us, even if there's a risk of having our players permanently brain damaged by a few seasons of losing.

A losing culture can be a concern, for sure, but it gets blown way out of proportion. If I was a Kings fan, I would absolutely be concerned about Cousins right now. I'm not saying a losing culture isn't a concern in some cases, but losing seasons are a part of rebuilding, and losing for a few seasons doesn't necessarily mean you have a losing culture.

Also, let's not confuse a mediocre culture with a winning culture. I don't consider our last two years with Alsap winning culture.

Reason I said end of last year was that the players has quit and if Corbin had come back I think it would have carried over. But it didn't.

I think that the Jazz would have been a hot mess if they hadn't gotten rid of Corbin. The team quit on him, and no amount of talent acquisition was going to change that.

Snyder has been building a strong team culture that will continue to look better and better as the players develop their individual and team games. I expected this year to be bumpy, and it's played out about as I would have imagined. . . except that Gobert has been even better than I'd imagined. He's a special player, that will become the franchise player tge Jazz have lacked. He makes everyone around him better when he's on the floor. As such, he's the kind of guy that kills a well-executed management tank-job. He wills himself and his teammates to win. I've never had a problem with winning or losing while they go through this process.

I don't really see the Jazz as having a losing culture, but they also don't have enough talent to take the next step. I'm happy to see them figuring it out and developing well. That is more important than wins or losses. I'd like to think that the bench is bad enough that they'll still end up with a top 7 pick, but the Core group might be too good to fall below the truly sad teams or outright tankers. Sucks, but I don't want them to slow down. I want them developing at a clip that makes them a playoff team next year. They're developing a defensive identity and a swagger that makes me proud to be a Jazz fan. DL is really good at scouting draftable prospects and has shown to be aggressive at getting who he wants. I'll reserve judgement until the draft before deciding if the winning is worth it or not.

As a corollary to Hollinger's Power Rankings, his projections shown on the playoff odds page would have us ending up with the #12 pick in the draft, behind all of the non-playoff teams in the East.

Which just sucks. I'd really like to see the Jazz end up in the bottom 7-8 picks and add one more solid piece in this draft, while trying to buy a bench to compliment the Core4 group of Gobert, Favors, Hayward and Exum. I'm not sure that 12 is really attainable with some of the moves made at the deadline, plus the Jazz bench and depth is still very suspect. I still figure 9 or 10 is most likely, but I could be way wrong about the suck factor of other teams.

Shoot the Jazz dancers too, while you're at it, just to be safe. And Bear.

Not the dancers! Bear? Go ahead

Pretty likely. We need to hope at least two ofthe following teams start winning: Detroit, Boston, Brooklyn, Charlotte, so we get the #10. My guess is that we get #11, worst case 12, best case 9.

Update:

Jazz are #14 now. Their strength of schedule in the past 25% of their games has still been the toughest in the NBA (.580) and their average scoring margin was +2.64 during that stretch.

Yeah, they've definitely turned a corner.

the Jazz are playing way above my expectations, part of that reason is because Burke is finally starting to come alive and our second unit is bringing the juice. Although i'm a little worried that Burke will revert to brick boss, but maybe just maybe he has turned a corner. He has been playing really well in the second unit, and maybe just maybe that is exactly where he belongs.

Update:

Jazz are #13 now. Their strength of schedule in the past 25% of their games has now only been the 5th toughest in the NBA (.543), but their average scoring margin was an extremely solid +5.00 during that stretch. .543 would still be tougher than anybody's entire schedule to date, and only three teams in the NBA have a higher scoring margin than +5 for the season(Atlanta, Golden State, and LA Clippers).

This could very easily be a playoff team next season.
