What's new

Utah Jazz Draftboard 2011

This is my list.

1. Irving
2. Williams

Then it's dartboard time. In pretty flexible order:

3. Knight
4. Walker
5. Kanter
6. Barnes
7. Henson
8. Jones, Perry
9. Mirotic
10. Vesely
11. Valunciunas
12. Some Euro I haven't heard of who can stay overseas.

Assuming 6 and 12, my hope is guys like Jones and Mirotec impress in workouts to be worthy of the 6. I'll talk myself into the Euro centers there if I have to. I'd be delighted if Barnes fell to 6 because I see low bust potential, just not star potential.

There is no point trading up for anyone other than Irving or Williams. From Knight on down, every player has red flags and it would be better to throw darts twice than think anyone else is a lock.

Barnes at 6? You must not really like the kid as you have been saying. I guess we'll see how good he really is in years to come(whether he stays in school or declares).

How do I not like Barnes at 6? I'm saying he's the best wing prospect in the draft. I'm just not high on his ceiling. I like his length, I'm buying into his defensive ability, he has two good hands (not a small thing), and a pretty decent handle. These are the things that worry me about Barnes:

1) Not a lights out shooter by any stretch, very average by the numbers
2) Good, not great NBA athleticism
3) Driving. This is my biggest issue. On the perimeter, I don't see a quick first step or the ability to break a guy down off the dribble. More importantly, he doesn't finish drives at the rim. Whether I'm wrong or right, this is huge to me. I don't like college guys who get into the paint and pull up short. I like college guys who want to go all the way to the rim and I really love college guys who finish over the rim. Barnes doesn't do either. He looks nothing like Evans as an example of what I'm talking about.

I think Barnes can develop. I would definitely draft him 6 on potential so long as he really rated out higher than the other wings. But in a normal year, he's not a Top 5 pick.

I like the Idea of drafting Barns and B. Knight. And I don't want to get reemed for this but Resigning Ak to a reasonable contract like 3-4 years for 6-8 Million. Then trading him for some youth and draft picks.

Good one. He actually follows through with the hometown discount so we cash in on it and then ship his ***. Pure class.

For the Jazz, I would draft in order
1. Irving
2. Derrick Williams
3. Barnes
4. Kemba Walker
5. Knight
6. Valanicous (6'11") center
7. Vesely
8. Terrence Jones
9. Leonard
10. Burks
11. Jimmer

I think i would have to take Knight over Walker. I like Knight's size better and think he will be the long term better player. Definitely, would take Kanter before Leonard. Do we need another undersized PF?

I'm not on board with all this "not fit our needs" talk. Is there anyone on this team who is a sure thing for next year? Even our best players, Al Jefferson and Paul Milsap aren't sure bets as long term fixtures. Jazz need to go with any player they think has star potential regardless of position and build around him and whoever else survives this off season. But if that means somebody who plays a big role on this current squad needs to go, so be it. You telling me it'd be better not to take Michael Williams because he doesn't fill a need? A guy with a ridiculous all round game who can light it up offensively at an all-star level doesn't fill a need?

I meant Derrick Williams not Michael Williams, obviously. Sorry for the double post, my edit option doesn't work. I figured the shame of a wasted post was less grievous than such an egregious error.

I am onboard with this thought process. We need the best players we can get our hands on. All of our current players are exependable under the right circumstances.

What makes Knight's long term potential better than Walker's? Walker is just good of shooter from the outside. Both are clutch scorers. Kemba can get the rim and finish. I have yet to see Knight get to the rim in a half court set.

Walker reminds me a little to much of Aaron Brooks.

Summed up quite well!

Not Jason Terry?

The problem with Terry would be we would have a very short shooting guard. i must admit to not seeing Walker a whole lot this year. Can he run the point is the big question and defend against the big points like DWill.

For me Williams is not a SF....

For me, it's so obvious he is. He's Antawn with a better perimeter game and weaker interior game, coming out of college that is. The kid would get destroyed by NBA 4's. Absolutely destroyed. I think his best bet is to lose 5-10 pounds and gain some quickness.

I think he's about as quick as Carmello and Ron Artest. He can play 3 if he wants to.
