What's new

Utah State Senator Mark Madsen switches to the Libertarian Party.

I’m not clear on the minutiae of the rules for third party admittance to the presidential debates.

The stated criteria of "a level of support of at least 15 percent of the national electorate as determined by five selected national public opinion polling organizations, using the average of those organizations' most recently publicly-reported results at the time of the determination,” is clear enough in the abstract but when exactly is that determination made and is it subject to change?

For example, the first debate is scheduled for September 26 while the last is not until October 19. If Johnson were to fall short of 15 percent in September polling but exceed 15 percent by October, would he be excluded from the first debate and then allowed to participate in the final debate?

My expectation is that Trump would fail miserably in a first one-on-one debate with Clinton and that, as a result, Johnson’s poll numbers could rise enough to put him over the 15 percent threshold and, theoretically at least, make him eligible for the last debate.

I'm not a hundred percent certain butt I'm pretty sure that it's not an average. He needs to get at least 15% N5 Nationwide polls selected by the commission on presidential debates. It is my understanding that they do not reveal which polls they will be using until after Labor Day or something.

I will most likely end up voting for these guys, but not enthusiastically. This video tempered my enthusiasm even more. Johnson does not impress me at all. His knowledge of most topics seems suspect (look at the marijuana discussion at the 27 minute mark or so as an example, this is one of his pet topics and he seems fairly clueless), his half-answers are infuriating (look at the weapons discussion and the LGBT discussion for instance), he has less than zero charisma, etc. I like Weld better. Like I say, I will probably vote for them because I can't bring myself to vote for the R or the D, but I sure wish they had come up with someone better than Johnson for the top of this ticket. He does nothing for me... but at least that's better than Trump and Hillary which do much less than nothing for me.

so I wonder, does this right to personal freedom extend to a woman's right to make personal medical decisions?

Moe, I have a question for you. First, let me say that my personal beliefs are abortion should only happen in the case of rape, incest or health of the mother. BUT, I feel that it is impossible to legislate that. My definition is waaaaaay too vague to use as the basis of law. Therefore, I think that the choice of abortion should be left up to the woman and her personal beliefs and the doctor (ie, the doctor can't prevent an abortion but they doctor can choose to not perform one).

The woman can decide what happens to her body. Let's say she decides to have an abortion and the man doesn't want one...it's her body she decides.

My question is this:

What if the flip happens? What if the woman decides she wants to have her baby but the guy doesn't want it? Shouldn't the man have some protections in this case? Would you be ok if the man were to sign a document that says that he wants no contact with the baby and that absolves him of any financial burden from the unwanted pregnancy?

Or does the man have no say in any of this and just has to deal with the decisions of the mother no matter how the man feels about it?
