Utah teacher shoots herself in the leg at elementary school

I wonder if there were kids in the restroom when that happened.

The news article said that there were not any kids around. It was before school, or something like that.

edit: Here's the quote: "The gunshot occurred a little before 9 a.m., before school started. No students were around when it occurred, Horsley said."

The main thing I got out of it, and what you quoted here is....

What? Elementary school doesn't start until 9am or later? How lazy is that administration?
Was always 8-8:15 for me.

Seriously, though, I see no need for teachers to carry a loaded firearm. Their absolute FIRST priority is the safety of their students. And that means getting them into a classroom and locking the door, not drawing fire towards themselves or their students as a gunman sees them reaching for a weapon. AFTER that, they could go to a locked drawer and get out their gun to use if/when an intruder breaks into the room.

But what usually happens in a school shooting? Someone walks on campus and starts targeting random students and school personnel - i.e. whoever is unlucky enough to be in sight at the time. The chance of this teacher being close by, then ducking for cover, unstrapping her gun and coming up firing with a "kill shot" to stop the shooter is very, very remote. This happens in a Hollywood movie, not in real life. There's a FAR greater chance of teachers like these, who are licensed, but more likely to not have advanced training, killing students with "friendly fire" than stopping a gunman.

I think there should be rather severe penalties for negligent discharges up to being prohibited from owning firearms. I think any negligent discharge of a concealed carry weapon should result in the suspension of your concealed carry permit until trial.

Negligent discharges don't just happen. This isn't just an unavoidable consequence of carrying a firearm. She was acting recklessly, one way or another. We can't let these instances go as if they are just some random unpreventable accidents. If you want to carry a gun you need to accept the responsibilities that go along with doing so. If you can't then you should not under any circumstances be permitted to carry a loaded weapon in public.

I think it is a very good idea to allow some teachers to carry guns at school.
But this should be limited to those teachers with former military service
or
lacking thereof to those who accept to go through a basic weapons training.

She needs a DEA agent to teach her gun safety.

As an educator, I can tell you that the chances of an accident occurring is a lot higher than some sort of shooting at a school. We here in Utah have 30+ to a classroom. Many teachers don't even have prep periods anymore. Sooooooo use common sense... More burdened the teacher, less time to think, more kids to manage... Leaving a recipe for absent mindedness and/or chance of an accident.

On days I don't have a prep, and go from 8-3 with only a 30 min break plus coaching at night, I'm constantly forgetting where I put my iPad, keys, and other valuables.

Honestly, I just don't see why teachers need to be armed. In the event of an attack, the last thing we need are more adults abandoning their kids to gum up the police. I doubt the last thing the police want is to decide which people with guns are good guys and which ones are bad.

Teachers should stick with their kids and not pour more gas onto the fire.

If you feel a need to be armed, then extensive training and certain regulations (like keeping ammo in a hidden safe) should be implemented.

My daughter's elementary school started around then. I think it was so that they could use the same school buses for all of the local schools. They staggered the starting and ending times accordingly.

This.

Typically secondary schools start earlier.
