Come Tuesday, Utah will become the only state in the nation with a law requiring a woman to wait 72 hours for an abortion.

"For some people that may be a point of celebration," said Planned Parenthood of Utah Director Karrie Galloway. "For others it may be a point of heartache."

HB461 is one of 331 laws passed by the 2012 Legislature that kick in Tuesday — and for some it is the most controversial.South Dakota was the first state to pass a 72-hour waiting period, but that law, which includes a requirement that a woman receive counseling at an anti-abortion clinic, was blocked by a court challenge before it ever took effect. No other state requires a waiting period of more than 24 hours.Opponents of Utah’s law haven’t ruled out a lawsuit but "the reality of doing a legal challenge is daunting — the cost and time, all of that," Galloway said. "We will be looking at it to see how it affects people, how it affects our providers as well as women."

OK pro-gun folks who see a waiting period to buy a gun as a violation of our sacred rights, I would now like to hear your justification for this piece of legislation.

I think that is a stupid way to phrase your question. I am very much pro gun. I am also personally against abortion but I think a woman has the right to get one. I am for personal liberty even when I personally disgree with what that liberty allows.

Pro-gun does not equal anti-abortion.

This was my first thought. What does one have to do with the other?

I don't really care for the debate on the topic by itself, I want to hear a person in the state of Utah who is conservative who supports basically unlimited gun rights give an argument for this law. That's what I'd like to hear. Everyone else is welcome to discuss the topic in whatever way they want.

I am pro gun, but don't have any problems with a waiting period to get one. I'm completely speculating here, but I think that gun nuts who view a waiting period as unacceptable and/or a violation of their rights are in the minority of the pro-gun segment. So I think that stereotype is a poor reflection of reality.

As far as abortion goes, this law is silly. I'm not sure what the legislature thinks will be gained, and it will surely create more issues than it solves, legally speaking.

That was the first thing that popped into my head as well.

Agreed with this as well.

Well I am guessing they are adding the wait time because they are thinking the woman may change her mind within the 72 hours?

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this as I am not thinking that 72 hours is that huge of a deal. Lets say they want the abortion on Friday, can't they just file it on Wednesday?

I am pro choice up until 120 days (a little past the first trimester) which is when like 99% of abortions are made. I think after that abortion should be avoided.

There are worse laws. That Utah (Herbert) defeated that abstinence-only bill is a miracle.

However, if this begins to mandate anti-abortion counseling it swings from sensible to insane swill.

I think the people seeking an abortion need to know it is available, but mandated? Hell no. I wonder the reasoning behind that from those that oppose the healthcare mandate. Anyone?

How many more BeanClown and Craig1221's are going to be saved because of this bill? Damn you, Utah. Damn you to Na'ar.

Kind of a cruel law. People getting abortions aren't generally really excited about it, they just understand that they can't care for the kid and being aborted is better than being born to parents that don't want you or being stuck in foster care your whole life. This law makes me sick.

Not always the outcome but yes yo do have a point. Make sure they know the counseling is available and leave it at that. Everything does not need to be mandatory. We are adults and can decide what is best for ourselves. Government (federal, state, county and city) needs to stay off our backs.

Waiting period for both is fine.
Wait a few days to be able to defend yourself.
Wait a few days to commit murder.
Simple.
How can you say being aborted is better than being in foster care?
Did anyone ask the aborted person?

Not everyone believes that. Also it is legally not murder despite what your personal feelings are.

I also think a background check is fine to be able to purchase a gun. I do not think a waiting period should be applied unless you fail the background check.

Too bad your mom didn't consider the option.

Predictably stupid, as usual.
