Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

I like it Roy. The only change I would make is replace Meeks with Frazier and Mac. http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ybx6clfm

We do this for multiple reasons:
#1 - Mac and Frazier are expirings
#2 - its a 4 for 4 trade so neither team would have to waive a player or do an additional move to make it work
#3 - this lets Washington shed more contracts and gets them about out of the luxury. We might be able to switch our 2nd for their 1st if we help them avoid the luxury and take Gortat.

Yeah, I like that better too because of the expiring contracts. I personally think that deal could make some real sense for both sides.

So here's a list of trade ideas I've thrown together that all work via salary. A lot of these deals are structured in a way that make sense because of expiring contracts, teams trying to dump salary, etc. So the contract details are important.

Jazz receive: Otto Porter, Marcin Gortat, Tim Frazier, Sheldon Mac
Wizards receive: Derrick Favors, Rodney Hood, Joe Johnson, Alec Burks

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ybx6clfm

(The Wizards are underperforming and have some serious team issues. Beal’s GF was even calling out Gortat’s poor play via twitter. They need a shakeup and desperately need a guy like Favors. They’re also big on Kelly Oubre. Moving Otto Porter would give Oubre more a chance to shine. Frazier and Mac’s deals are expiring).

Jazz Receive: Reggie Jackson, Stanley Johnson, Henry Ellenson, Eric Moreland
Pistons Receive: Rodney Hood, Ricky Rubio, Joe Johnson

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7ne8am3

(It’s no secret the Pistons are eager to dump Reggie Jackson’s contract and they have team chemistry issues. Henry Ellenson was a high draft pick a few years ago who hasn’t materialized but can shoot outside. Stanley Johnson has also been a disappointment for them.)

Jazz receive: Kevin Love, Jae Crowder
Cavs Receive: Rodney Hood, Derrick Favors, Joe Johnson, Tony Bradley, Jazz 1st round pick lottery protected for two years and then turns into a 2nd rounder.

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yb8ypqa6

Jazz receive: Evan Fournier, Bismack Biyombo, Jonathan Simmons
Magic receive: Rodney Hood, Alec Burks, Derrick Favors, Joe Johnson

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yaz7tj7t

(Bismack Biyombo is a bad contract that Magic seem eager to get rid of. This deal compensates the Jazz additionally for taking on his poor contract.)

Jazz receive: Nikola Mirotic
Bulls Receive: Tony Bradley, Derrick Favors

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydgb2qjx

Jazz receive: Avery Bradley
Pistons receive: Rodney Hood, Joe Johnson

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y8vc5ugh

Jazz Receive: Timothy Luwawu-Cabarrot, Jerryd Bayless, Brooklyn’s 2nd round pick
76ers Receive: Derrick Favors, Jazz 2nd round pick

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yadz5zup

Jazz Receive: Nikola Mirotic, Jae Crowder
Cavs Receive: Derrick Favors, Rodney Hood
Bulls Receive: Cavs 1st round pick, Channing Frye

I don't like the Detroit deals at all. The Orlando deal is also bad imo. I wouldn't do the Cleveland deal either.

The others are fine.

Merging multiple ideas I wonder if Philly would go for this:

Philly to Utah: 1st round pick in 2018 (top 10 protected), TLC, Bayless
Utah to Philly: Favs, Hood

I know Philly wants to take a big swing in FA, but they need to ensure they make the playoffs to convince a star that the future is bright. Let's be honest... they have a a very low chance at landing a star and Hood is a good backup plan and fits really well. They also have a roster spot crunch next year. This deal actually clears some cap space because Rodney's cap hold is so low.

Well Cousins went down for the year with a torn achilles. Favors would be a nice pickup for the Pelicans. Too bad they have no expiring contracts to match up with Favors. Asik + Jackson for Favors is the only thing that really makes sense and I don't know if the Jazz want Jackson bad enough to take on the last year of his (Asik's) contract in 2018 then the 3 million guaranteed in 2019. Maybe the Pelicans would do Favors + Hood for Jackson/Asik/1st round pick? Could the Jazz do better tho? IDK.

Good post Cy. Favors makes a ton of sense. Hood and Favors would be massive for them in response to losing Boogie.

Favors and Hood for Asik, Jackson and their unprotected 1st.

Ehh, doubt we could get it unprotected. Maybe like top 10 protected or something? Turns into something else if it doesn't convey and all that.

I would be intrigued yet extremely nervous if we traded for Otto Porter. It would be a high risk high reward move. If he blows up into a player that deserves that 4 year 105 million dollar contract that he signed then we would be in great shape. If he remains essentially a role player then his contract could become toxic.

Why? They need cap relief... they need a good big... they need a wing... we deliver three things they need. Not sure I’d want to take on that much dead salary in asik.

Also it’d be a bad look for us to give a team we are chasing two key rotation players.

The reason they wouldn't do it is because they might not be able to afford Hood next year. I'm sure they still want to re-sign Cousins. If they sign Cousins, even to a deal that is discounted due to injury (lets say 25 million a year) then they probably cant pay Hood.

Frank and asik for Favs.... you *****in me? I’m not sure the second deal is good enough either... it’s close but not a slam dunk.

They probably still make the playoffs this year if the can get Hill back soon.

Taking into account the pick’s salary and asik/Jackson is like 15M. Taking asik off their hands is a big help. They can stretch Ajinca if they need some added space.

They won’t get anything better than that imo.

I also don’t think this gets NO a discount on Boogie. I bet the Lakers get desperate... sounds like PG may stay in OKC.

Gonna be another interesting summer.

I mean, Jackson was a guy a lot of people considered a first round pick if it wasnt for his foot issue. Jazz likely arent going to be players in 2018 free agency anyway. Getting Jackson is like getting a first round pick.

A reminder, Jackson was pretty comparable to Mitchell in the draft. Both combo guards with insane vertical leaps. Didnt have Mitchell's freak wingspan (just 6'7) but did have him beat in standing reach. It's safe to assume Jackson would have risen up draft boards if he didnt have to shut himself down early w/ foot surgery (I believe he had to cancel his Utah workout).

If we liked him that much we could have just taken him... it ain’t like getting a first rounder really at all. He’s already burned a year with the injury, so he has less time to become good on a cheap deal.

I know we likely don’t have space this year but we can find something better with 11m than asik and Jackson. And then he cuts into 2019 space too.

They want something built around Favs and asik then there needs to be a real first round pick involved.

I don’t care that they may not be able to afford Hood... I think he can get a first by himself. Their situation isn’t our problem... if they say no they can live in mediocrity and the tax. Hood and Favs gives them a backup plan in case Boogie leaves.

Reminder we had the 30th pick in the draft and if we liked him that much we would have picked him.

Also you have to factor the foot injury into the value. Some guys aren’t built for basketball. He very likely recovers but it’s not a great sign.

You know they could have liked both him and Bradley, right? The Jazz already drafted a combo guard with the 13th pick, his name was Donovan Mitchell, so the optics of trying to develop both of them might have been unattractive to the Jazz vs the idea of adding a center they had high on their board.

Things have changed and they seem like they want to move on from Hood w/ Mitchell as the long-term 1 or 2, which leaves the backup 2-guard slot to be filled. There is a need now for another 2-guard like Jackson.

Sure they liked Bradley better but now they like frank enough to eat 15M in dead money and give up a talented player to a team in the conference that might drop out of the playoffs.

I’m guessing if they like him that much now they would have picked him then. We know how much DL values his flexibility and cap space... that’s a terrible trade... did LoPo hack your account?
