UTEP v BYU in some bowl

How bout that Cody Hoffman kid, eh? He did all that without even running good routes. If that kid can start running better routes, Heaps to Hoffman will be legendary. Well.... almost as good as Heaps to Apo. Even though I was bitching about there being too many bowl games earlier, I definitely can see the value in it. The stage is now set for a great year next year.

He redeemed himself from the Utah game.
What happened to Apo this year?

Hurt his hand and redshirted. Dude has Andrei Kirilenko arms though. I always got a kick out of college corners trying to cover Mike Williams when he was at USC. Leinart would put the ball in the air and the guy would go get it two feet above everyone else. Nobody at that level could do anything about it. That's exactly how it is going to be with Apo, except that he's faster than Williams and can out jump him, but their pass catching range is very similar. They are going to be a nasty WR duo.

Very interesting:

PROVO — BYU's offensive coaches were asked to seek other employment while head coach Bronco Mendenhall conducts individual staff evaluations in the coming days to see which assistant coaches he will retain.

Is that standard procedure? It seems strange that everyone is cut loose, but he might bring some of them back. I have just never heard of that before. Good news nonetheless.

There's no way that's standard procedure. I think it means Anai is out, and some of the staff will be rehired whereas others will also be let go.

A source very close to my father (who knows the insides of BYU Football) said that Anai was VERY nervous about this UTEP game. Basically, he knew that this bowl game could have been his last game. I don't think this guarantees that Anai is out, although it doesn't look good.

If BYU's offense had sucked, I think Anai could have cleaned out his office the next morning. But since the offense did look halfway decent the last few games, they may keep him around longer.

But I think the leash is short on many coaches, not just Anai.

There are several things at works right now in BYU. I promise you that I didn't get this stuff from an encounter at bestbuy. But it's stuff that my father has told me. And my dad's friend is very close to BYU.

As I typed this, my Dad has more info.

It sounds right now that Anai is out, the WR coach is out, and the O-line coach is out. Chad Lewis has shown interest in coaching.... Perhaps the new WR coach?

From what I've been told, several things are going to be emphasized in the next few years:

#1 BYU doesn't want to stay independent. They want to joni a BCS conference. This isn't a surprise to anyone... But the main issue here is pressure. Bronco cannot afford to have any more years like these. He also cannot have very many more bonehead incidents, (like the QB situation), or so many problems with coaches. A change in all of this appeared after Hill was fired. Bronco noticeably took a larger role in his Football program.
#2 Recruiting. BYU realizes that they recruited some GREAT kids but aren't the most talented. An emphasis in talent is going to be made. True, you probably won't see them going Gary Crowton and recruiting kids who have no shot at meeting the HC standards. But also, BYU's coaches understand that they need to break free from this recruit farm kid mentality.
#3 Offense. BYU's offense stunk for most of the year this year. They want to get back to a wide open cutting edge offense like they've had for the better part of the past 3 decades. Anai, if fired for anything, will be fired for being too conservative.

Anyway, that's what I've heard. I'm not going to be arrogant and say that all of these things will happen. However, I can say that these issues are being discussed by those high up in BYU's Football hierarchy.

Some rumors I've heard:

Doman becomes OC. (I wouldn't mind seeing Bosco come back.)
Ben Cahoon comes to coach receivers.
Detmer is interested in coming to coach. I know he's been coaching at a school in Texas.
Chad Lewis as TE coach.
Lance Reynolds stays on in some capacity.

I've also heard that Detmer is being considered as the QB coach to take Doman's spot. Doman is going to be the OC next year. Lance Reynolds appears safe (so far). There are two candidates for the O-line position. The one that appears to have the advantage, I believe has the last name of Anderson. I can't remember his first name. He and Doman appear to know each other from the 49ers.

That group would clean up recruiting wise. Let's hope even half that list comes true.

I spoke with Doman face to face about this about a month ago. He was very political (especially talking about Anae) but it is obvious he is ready for his shot. And his comments make it seem like a move is coming (I brought this up about a month ago). He has turned down offers elsewhere and I think that's because he knew he would eventually get his shot. He is a great QB coach but it remains to be seen if he can be a great OC. However, knowing a little about how Anae does things it would not be hard to improve on that. I don't know that Doman gives up coaching the QBs though. That is his bread and butter. I would be surprised and dissappointed if Doman isn't the next OC. In fact, I'd say BYU success next year rides heavily on it.

The WRs need serious work. There are some very basic things they are not doing. While the talent isn't top shelf and never will be there is plenty there to have success.

Chad Lewis would be a great fit to work with those young TEs. I've coached with him a few times and he definitely has what it takes.

Speaking of Anae, when he became OC is when the Poly Pipeline took a severe downturn (especially out of Kahuku). He struggles with social skills.

I'm not too worried about that. Guys like Detmer were only able to hang around the NFL because they were de facto coaches. My only question is how blue Doman really is. There was a lot of rumors floating around about him calling plays at certain points throughout this year, but I have no clue if there is any truth to that. He's the key cog in all of this.

The way Anae but together scripts was pretty bad. They would have all their plays up on a board and then all the offensive coaches in the room. Then they would go around and each coach would get to select a play til they had their script.

Totally freaking stupid.
