Valanciunas update: buyout agreement close but won't allow him to play next year

You have to take him at 12. Interesting to see if this affects KOC's decision to move down. If Kanter becomes a hotter commodity, the deals might get better.

In the mock draft contest, I have him going 12, hoping that the wait might push him down. The Jazz will have their draft pick and if they got him at 12, that's a godsend.

Interestingly after this news the Cavs announce they have decided on Irving and will shop the 4th pick. JV was their man, over Kanter.

So now for the hard question. If the Jazz draft Knight at 3 then who is the best pick up for the Jazz @12? Burks, Thompson, Montijunas or Valanciunas?

The crazy thing is no smart team would want to bring him over next year anyway. So if he's going to drop, it's because lottery GM's are worried about their jobs, which is about the most perfect situation for us to be in.

At 12 this guy would be my DREAM pick. If we go Knight at 3 and Valanciunas at 12 I will be THRILLED, because Val at 12 totally makes up for any loss of value with Knight at 3. Having two lottery picks is IDEAL in this situation because KOC not being on a hot seat allows him to do this no problem. No doubt in my mind if we go Knight at 3 and Val is available at 12 he's the pick.

That would be fairly epic indeed.

Also the lock-out comes into play, which might be a reason he goes sooner. But you're right, there's less pressure on KOC than a lot of GM's with lottery picks. KOC could afford to stash Valanciunas, especially with some other contracts in place that lessen the immediacy of drafting replacements (CJ for 1 year to fill the SF position, Okur as a backup big for 1 more, etc.).

If Valanciunas is available at 12, we have to pick him. We don't need him to come and play the lockout-shortened season while he can get stronger overseas. I am hoping for this to happen.

Knight at 3 and Valanciunas at 12 would almost be my ideal draft. I'm not sold on Kanter, but I get the hype and think he may be special. I'm frankly not sure which is better him or Knight. (I'm still a DWill2 homer and am praying he falls, but that's another issue.) As see it, Kanter and Valanciunas have similar potential and I have no idea which will ultimately be better than the other. So, if we manage to land both Knight and Valanciunas, that's about as good as I might have hoped. I'd queue up to plant a sloppy one on KOC's backside.

I would prefer Valanciunas play in Europe another year rather than a couple minutes here or there in the NBA.
