I post this tribute to the late Pope here in the politics section, the death of a Pope is an overtly political moment. Better people will pay tribute to the late holy father, I'm surprised by how affected I've been by his death. I think mostly because as Pope, Francis was a real spiritual leader, a real man of faith, humility and god. I'm an atheist and whenever I talk of religion I'm normally looking for a punchline, but I never felt that way with this pope. I was always moved by his dedication to the poor, his desire to speak out against injustice. He was a rare leader of absolute principal, which we need more than ever in this world.

My hope is that the Catholic Church can find another Cardinal with the dignity, principal and love or the marginalised that the last Pope lived and breathed.

To the Holy father, rest in peace.

I saw a meme of a picture of Kristi Noem and JD Vance. Kristi Noem was saying "I kill dogs" and JD Vance was saying "hold my beer"

I just find it weird that he’s known as a “progressive” pope for saying that immigrants and gays were children of god. That’s progressive? What does that mean for conservatives?

As a Pope he was undeniably more progressive than his predecessors. You take what you can get from an organization that has been a force for oppression, sexual assault, child rape and molestation, the marginalization of women, and the persecution of the LGBTQ community. Sure, we'd be better off if the Catholic Church (and all major religious institutions) just went away, but they aren't doing that.

I just want to clarify that the way I described the Catholic Church is based on their current activities. Historically it is MUCH MUCH worse.

The reality is the Church has been a state and has acted like a nation state for a thousand years. The modern church really is somewhere between this legacy and its future. I think Francis wanted the church to be an open inclusive church dedicated to ministering to the poor, however opposition to this is entrenched. Namely in the US but also in Africa and Eastern Europe where the church is far more conservative than in other parts of the world. I think had Francis been younger things like female priests and an end to celibacy for the clergy may have happened.

In many ways modernity has been a massive problem for the church. In my grandparents lifetime, which is only 100 years ago, the priest in their village was married and had a family, everybody knew it but nobody mentioned it. These days a scandal like that would be know overnight and that priest would be defrocked and removed by the Bishop. Now the fact they wouldn't do that to paedophiles is another very disturbing issue. The problem with the vow of celibacy is that it is frankly unnatural and attracts people who are unnatural.

It will be very interesting to see if the next pope continues the legacy of Pope Francis.
