for obvious reasons..
gee is a smart man who occasionally says dumb things.
He's right that big 12 schools are, for the most part, superior academic institutions than sec schools. Vanderbilt is the lone highly reputable research school school in the sec, while in the big 12 you have a number of strong research schools, such as michigan, wisconsin, ohio state, northwestern and maybe some others. That said, tennessee knoxville isn't a bad research school and neither is georgia. Alabama has a surprisingly high rated law school.
Evidently, keen self awareness isn't necessarily a requirement to be president at the ohio state.
Too bad he apologized. He's right for the most part. The Catholic church is a joke.
I thought his comments on SEC fans were spot on.

About learning to read and right? Those comments were about the universities, not the fans. This makes your post null and void and you are hereby placed in timeout.
The fact he's a Mormon is why I thought it would be being discussed here. I have very good friends, whom are high-ranking LDS members, that openly bash Catholics...
Not surprising. Bruce R. McConkie used to be very influential and wrote "Then speaking of harlots in the figurative sense, he [Nephi] designated the Catholic Church as ‘the mother of harlots’", even though the church shuns such nonsense.
I didn't think Gee's comments were anything but bad poor humor, and very harmless. I'd actually like to see more of this stuff in the sports world.
*big 10
I don't mind bad humor. But I also believe he believes what he said whole-heartedly.
So what I would like to see is more truthfulness. I have no problem with his comments, but rather his apology. It's self-righteousness at its finest. I would GREATLY prefer he say, "My feelings are Mormons live a more Christ-like life than Catholics, generally.. and would therefore prefer to not hang out with pretend Christians." He'd still be self-righteous.. but at least not a lying self-righteous coward.
Why do you think that? Sounds to me like he's staring down his nose at the other schools.
It was an insensitive thing to say. But I think the spirit in which he said it was meant to be "gamesmanship" - i.e. taking a swipe at Notre Dame, especially regarding their negotiations with the conference. I don't get too upset by the ribbing that goes on in here during the BYU-Utah game weeks. Joke about BYU coeds and we'll reply "Harline is still open." But there is a line that sometimes gets crossed and joking turns to insults. As a university president, Gee should have been more dignified in his remarks. Let the AD or football coach tell the ND jokes. And especially in his situation as a Mormon. He should have known his comments would be scrutinized. He said that "you can't trust those damn Catholics."
He said that "priests are holy on Sunday's and holy hell every other day of the week."

I'm neither denomination.. but was surprised to hear a smart Mormon dude make such dumb statements.. and then apologize by saying he was joking. I guess that was the only angle he could take, though. I'm not Catholic, nor am I anti-Mormon, but I found the statements insulting, regardless.
