What's new

Video Game Thread

My go-to combination was Julia and Michelle Chang. I understand they are relatively unpopular characters to play with, which may have worked to my advantage due to unfamiliarity with move sets.

Could it have been you chose them due to your pubescent state at the time?

So AP, how psyched are you for Skyrim? It's the 2nd game ever I've preordered (the first being Oblivion).

You know, I'm likely going to be so busy starting my PhD program that I don't know that I'll have much chance to play it. Plus, Dark Souls will be coming out around the same time, and if I'm going to play anything, it's going to be that.

The other thing of course is that Bethesda usually releases a "gold edition" or similar, after all the extra content has been released. I'm excited for the game, but I may actually wait for a price drop or for the more definitive edition to come out.

You might know more about it than I do. What are the big changes? I know there'll be dual-wielding of both weapons and magic, and there's the dragons to fight. Any other big features for this one?

I must say, though, I've been pre-ordering games more now that Amazon has the release-date delivery for a dollar. Good times there. Did it for Red Dead and Mass Effect 2.

Played the new Duke Nukem at a friends, and it was sorely disappointing. They lost all the spirit of the original and settled for gross-out jokes and over the top misogyny. As an avowed philogynist I found it stupid and crude, even with my jr. high school sense of humor. The game play was alright, and the aliens were definitely cool and well-done, but I was looking forward to more of the Duke's one-liners and tongue-in-cheek humor. What they put out is a game that looks great, but plays like it was built on a game engine at least 3 generations behind, with verbal "effects" so stupid I turned it off. Truly sad.

AP, you had two Final Fantasy titles on your list there. I respect your opinion, (we seem to have similar taste) so I'm curious how you would rank the Final Fantasy titles you've played, and specifically what you think of the current direction of the series.

Knew I'd remember some other games that deserved inclusion on my list once I thought about it a little more. Hopefully this'll be it after these few latecomers:

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)

How did I forget this? I got Mario 64, but I think it's probably blasphemy to leave this one out.

Halo (2001)

I still like the original Halo the best. It had the best sound design of its generation (just one part of a superb overall cinematic-feeling presentation), along with the most compelling campaign among any of the Halo games.

Capcom vs. SNK 2 (2001)

Everyone knows Street Fighter... fewer in the States know SNK, but they're big in Japan, with games such as King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, and Fatal Fury. This game features a huge cast of characters from both developers, and allows up to three characters on a team. There's even a "groove" system that allows different players to have different types of game mechanics -- like air blocking, just defense, rolling, dodging, short jumps, different types of super meters. All of it made for a hugely customizable 2D fighting experience that remains one of the best ever to this day.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)

Here's another one I can't believe I forgot. Grand Theft Auto should be represented somewhere in my list, and San Andreas just seemed like the best version, although all of them are good... it's sort of up for grabs.

You know, I've kind of stayed away from the more recent ones. Square Enix still excels at presentation, but the last few just didn't seem all that compelling gameplay-wise. My one-time roommate played both 12 and 13 and was underwhelmed, so I never even picked them up, myself. I did start both 8 and 9 but didn't finish either of them... I just didn't care enough.

I'd rank the ones I've played like this:

Tactics
VII
X
V
IV
VI
I
II
VIII
IX

If you like Final Fantasy games, you'd be well-advised to look into Persona 3 FES or Persona 3 Portable, as well as Tales of Vesperia (or Tales of Symphonia, if you happen to have a Gamecube or Wii). Those were the best "traditional" JRPGs I've played in recent memory... proving that the genre isn't quite dead yet, although I think it may be heading that way.

I don't know why but I never have really cared for 2nd person perspective in video games. I prefer first-person or panorama/map views. I never enjoyed being above and behind my character in the game.

Borderlands 2 ftw.

Wow, I didn't even realize it had been announced. I loved the hell out of the first one, played through with all four characters and maxed them all out.

However, it does look like it's over a year away, and these are the same jokers who recently put out Duke Nukem Forever, so I won't get excited yet.

BTW, anyone here play Monster Hunter at all? There's one on the PSP (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, that's the one I have), and one on the Wii (Monster Hunter Tri, my brother has that one). Amazing friggin' game. Fans of Demons' Souls or Shadow of the Colossus would probably dig it.

I have it for the Wii although I've never played it bought it for my son, maybe I should try it.

Get ready to wonder just where those 200+ hours of your life went.

At its core I agree that it's a lot like Demon's Souls... the biggest difference being that while it manages to be very challenging (rare these days), it doesn't take your lunch money and then kick you in the balls when you lose like Demon's Souls does.

Woah, I just saw that a new Dues Ex came out? Jazzfanz, where are you at? I don't really surf video game sites anymore so I never even knew it was in development. You guys are supposed to tell me. I'm going to have to dust off one of my machines and give it a go.

Now I'm torn. I saw previews for Battlefield 3 and thought for sure it would take me away from MW3. Now I just saw a new preview for MW3 and dogs with bombs attached as a kill streak seems pretty damn cool to me.

Yeah I don't have the time like I used to and can't in good conscious buy every game I think looks cool anymore. So I'm torn between MW3 and Battlefield 3 myself plus when going back and forth between the two especially when playing online always messes me up cause the buttons are just different enough, so I was thinking of only getting one of those two.
Also anybody heard or know much about Rage I was trying to decide if I should get that or Resistance 3, guess I should get the blockbuster online and play games that way for the ones I may not play online or not play after beating.
Of course have to save room for a RPG style game like Demon Souls and maybe one other RPG game.
