As Candrew stated, getting a true, starting-caliber PG to sign with us will be damned difficult because he'll know the commitment we have in Exum. So, we aim for the HIGHEST-quality backup who can play 30+ minutes if needed.

Fair enough. Basically the best PG we can get becuase Burke is not cutting it with 0-10 shooting nights.

Agree with this!! Next Summer just draft/trade for the best shooting 2/3 guard. Pr go and sign Leonard for a max. Front loaded with a player option after year 3.
 
2-3 years away is going to be painful. I think Honzworth is going to take his money and run to another team if we aren't making second round within 3 years. Favors will probably stay, Gobert is going to get a lot of money (either here or somewhere else). XOXO TB

Or if we did sign a starting PG we could sign him to 2 or 3 years. Gives flexibility and the player would probably want it so he could get more money with the cap going up.

Agree. With Hayward - and to a lesser extent, Burks - we have wings who can drive and dish. They're essentially the PG's when they're in the game. What we really need from Dante is defense and 3PT shooting. And the same holds true for any other PG's or wings. Gordon and Alec can initiate the offense. Just give them "3 and D" players to complement their games and the bigs we have.

Also, as BabyPeterzz pointed out, Exum is the 5th option. The PG needs to be the 4th or 5th option. Dante recognizes that; Trey never did as a starter.

Speaking of 3-and-D guys, could we have found a steal in Elijah Millsap? His field goal percentage has been dreadful but his 3-point percentage is around 38% and we all know he's a capable defender.

A Millsap is a Millsap, he can be a very serviceable player coming off the bench. Also it wouldn't be pricey to keep him. We all know how well his brother evolved.

Yes, I think he'll be a capable backup. He's certainly a pest on defense. He really bothered Tyreke in the 2nd half. IINM, didn't we sign him to a 3yr deal, with the next two being team options? Having assets like Elijah allows players like Hood or even this year's draft pick to be included in any trades. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Utah trade their pick for a quality veteran wing or combo guard.

Johnson also looked decent in the 10 days we had him. Jazz may sign him after the break to another contract. It was just bad timing to do it again as he'd only be around for 2 games and then have his 2nd contract expire during the break. Sign him next week and the Jazz get him for 4 games - plus practices on the off days.

Who knows? We have no way of knowing who might be on the trading block. And the draft likely influences that as teams bring in rookies who can displace veterans. The Jefferson deal caught us all by surprise. The only drawback is that contracts aren't as long. So we'd be giving up a young player whose rights we'd have for 8 years for a more expensive player who might just have a couple of seasons left on his contarct.
 
I expect Exum to make a huge leap next season. As soon as he gets some confidence he'll be able to do A LOT more.
 
I agree with the posters talking about Exum's defense. He's pretty good and really keeps his man in front of him. Every now and again he blocks a perimeter shot that the other player clearly didn't expect. I don't think he is our best perimeter defender... that would probably be Gordon or Millsap, but he is waaaaay better than Trey and is ahead of the curve in that regard.

I think our team defense will be amazing once we move Gobert into the starting lineup with Favors. Bigs have a much greater impact on defense than perimeter players for the most part. With Favs and Gobert I think we will need our perimeter players to be really good offensively. Not saying Exum can't get there, but right now it is rough. Again, next year is the telling year, but I am just a little worried that our playoff/championship window is contingent on such a raw player developing into a useful player quickly.

On a sidenote... it really sucks that Trey is so terrible. Not sure if I had the blinders on last year, but he seemed like such a better player last year. If he low end starter quality this wouldn't be an issue.
 
I do like the suggestion of bringing in a guy like Cory Joseph. I think he could be had too... With Patty Mills back I'm not sure you'd want to pay a 3rd pg around $5 M a year (I think that is what it would take to bring him in). There is obvious danger in picking up Spurs System guys though... they tend to look a lot better when playing for the Spurs than when they move on to other teams.
 
Corey Joseph all day, bishes. He's an excellent defender and would fit into Q's vision immediately. And, we can afford that $$$.

Get it done.
