U.S. select spotlight on … : Utah Jazz and U.S. select team forward Gordon Hayward has a fan on the men's Olympic team: gold medalist and five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant.

"Gordon is one of my favorite young players in the league," Bryant said. "I think very, very highly of him. … But Gordon's been one of my favorites. He's very talented. He's smart. He plays with a lot of poise. He has good size and doesn't back down. He likes to compete."

Hayward averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists last season, his second in the NBA.

"We've talked during games," Hayward said. "I admire Kobe because he's such a competitor. It's something I try to imitate. I realize he's worked extremely hard to get where he's at, so I'm going to have to do the same."

Hayward played on the Under-19 team at last summer's world championship and understands the commitment could pay off for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

"It's a goal," he said. "Being part of the select team, you put your name in the program and continue to work as hard as you can so maybe in 2016, you'll have a chance to be on that roster."

Despite a video of Cleveland Cavaliers and select team point guard Kyrie Irving putting on a dribbling clinic against the Olympians, Hayward said, "We've taken some beatings already."

Added Bryant: "It's been brutal for them."

Totally random here .. but there was a guy, years ago, on a UK forum, that wrote we needed a more "fast paste" offense. He then proceeded to try to convince us he was right. Funny as ****. And he wasn't tolling..

Hayward played on the Under-19 team at last summer's world championship

Hard to take anything serious from this article when they can't even get facts right. Hayward never played for U-19 USA team last summer.

Butler's Hayward, Mack lead Team USA to U-19 world title

The USA set out to end a nearly two-decade draught in the FIBA U19 World Championship when it headed to Auckland, New Zealand, for this year’s 16-team international tournament. Mission accomplished.

With Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas) scoring 18 points and six other players adding at least eight points, the USA held off Greece, 88-80, to capture the gold medal. It was the first title for the USA at the FIBA U19 World Championship since 1991.

The USA pulled away from a 19-19 tie at the end of the first quarter with a 16-1 run to start the second period. Ashton Gibbs (Pittsburgh), who started the run with a basket off an assist from Butler’s Gordon Hayward, scored six points in the five-minute stretch, while Terrico White (Mississippi) added five.

Greece battled back in the third quarter, cutting a 46-30 halftime lead to 50-42 with 5:38 remaining in the period and then closing to within five points, 54-49, with 1:30 left. But the USA rallied in the final minute to stretch the margin back to nine, 60-51, after three quarters and then maintained a double-digit lead through most of the final period.

After the victory, Hayward commented in a USA Basketball release that the team was committed to ending the long USA title draught.

"We came in with that goal and we said "gold medal" during our huddles from day one. That was our focus the whole time and we got it done."

"It's just a great feeling, a great accomplishment to represent your country and finish first and get the job done. Bonding with these (players) for however long we did is great and all our hard work paid off," added Hayward.

Butler’s Shelvin Mack played 17 minutes in the victory and finished with four points and one rebound, while Hayward, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, wound up with four rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot in 25 minutes. Hayward, who entered the game as the top scorer for the USA, took just two shots in the game and didn’t score.

Taylor, who joined Hayward on the All-Tournament Team, led the balanced USA attack, while Gibbs chipped in with 13 points. Klay Thompson of Washington State and Arnett Moultrie (UTEP) each added 10 points.

In addition to Hayward and Taylor, the All-Tournament Team included Nikos Pappas (Greece), Toni Prostran (Croatia) and tournament MVP Mario Delas (Croatia).

The USA finished the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record. Six of the team’s nine games were decided by double-digits and only Croatia (81-77) came closer than five points to the champs. The U19 World Championship title was the seventh all-time for the USA.

Hayward also was named to the All Tourney team. I dno about Macks production though.

was definitely not me. i don't have too much knowledge on college prospects. as a longhorn i do hope Myck Kabongo can be our PG of the future though :D on a side note i was wearing my G-Time t-shirt around campus yesterday and caught the attn of another jazz fan. this is really rare, happens bi-annually.

Read original article, they say he played for U-19 championship last summer. Last year U-19 was in Latvia where USA failed to even win medal and certainly Hayward was not there.

No, I did not. I meant original article with Kobe's thoughts which is dated July 8, 2012. I watched last years U-19 almost every game. That team was lead by J.Lamb, M.Leonard and P.Young. Obviously Hayward was to old to play for U-19 last summer. Thats why I said that article is wrong.
