Watson Appreciation Thread

Stifle Tower

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
OK, this could go in the game thread, but I think it deserves its own topic. I've always been impressed by Watson's assist totals. And though he generally scores just a few points, or even puts up a goose egg, he occasionally contributes with some big shots. However, what impresses me most - and he did it multiple times last night - are the picks he sets to create easy shots/dunks for the big men. The primary recipient last night was Favors. Derrick's buckets came after hard picks by Watson. Last night, I'd say Watson was a major reason for the Jazz victory. Quite simply, he plays in that respect like Stockton did, and I don't say that lightly. I'd put Watson down in the "untradeable" category. I want him to mentor the next Jazz PG. And after his playing days are over, I'd like to see the Jazz immediately offer him a coaching position. I wish all the Jazz players could have the same unselfish attitude, do the little things that don't show up in their box score.

Part of the reason I really like this team in some ways is that I see a lot of players doing more of this than they did with the last collection of players. There are players on this team that I question whether or not this is true (Howard anybody). But for the most part I think this team generally wants to do what is required to win. And yes Watson is the best example of this. But Hayward is right behind him.

He is O'fer the past 4 games - yes, he hasn't hit even 1 FG attempt.

With that being said, I still want to have his babies!

I remember a thread I made once about Watson and Harris. I was assured Harris would pull it together and was told I was overreacting.

That said, I love everything Earl brings to the team. Beyond that he's a hell of a nice guy. I used to live in the same building as him downtown and he was always nice and everyone in the building loved the dude. Basically what I'm saying is I'll go halves with someone on a mini statue of Earl and bolt it in front of ESA.

Locke:
Any minute Earl Wastson gives right now is amazing. He showed me his ankle today it is still two times the size of the other one. He is wearing one sock higher than the other because the bruise is so high he doesn’t want anyone to see it. It looks awful. This guy is the ultimate pro and I promise you this is being noticed by his teammates and they are not going to be sitting out with little nagging injuries. Devin Harris is beaten up right now but the tone has been set and he is playing through it.

· Super win for the Jazz tonight.

Make him untradeable. I completely agree.

Every team needs an Earl Watson - a guy who is going to come in and do his job plus the dirty work that doesn't show up in the box score - setting screens, deflecting passes, getting back on transition D....

Having said that, I think the Earl Watson worship on this board is way over the top. The guys a solid role player - that's it. Nice to have - but when they're the tail that wags the dog you go nowhere.

The one thing I'm glad to see go with the Jerry Sloan era is this franchise's over infatuation with the gritty, grind it out, low talent, second round/free agent, little engine's that could, just glad to be here, know my role journey man, nice guy, overlooked/under-hyped types.

I want talent - raw and refined - and overflowing. I want lottery picks, big names, big schools, big agents, big hype playing players who were told the NBA was their birth right since they were 9 years old.

I love Earl. Guy runs the offense well, pushes the ball, and best of all is tenacious and competitive. I like him much better than Harris.

I want that too. And I'm not proposing Earl be a starter; he's way past his prime. But even if he eventually slips to #3 on the depth chart at PG, I still want him on the team.

plenty of fans of teams on message boards (believe me, I've been on a lot of message boards for different teams) seem to think their teams should get All-Stars for every position. That works in limited situations, but for most teams, you ideally get a few guys who are top choices for scoring and defense, some role players who do the little things and can knock down shots every now and then, and maybe a guy or two like Earl or Nick Collison who annoy the heck out of the other team's players and provide leadership and intangibles for their own teammates. Earl's been called, "a player only a coach and a mother will love." Fortunately he's also appreciated by the fans, but that comment means that his hustle and smarts and the little things he does are things that will often times only be appreciated by coaches because they don't always appear in the box score or as plays that most fans pay attention to.

I appreciate the attention to detail, GlassEater. :)

Watson is probably the best back-up pg in the universe. And he's certainly showing what that means while our starting pg's sucking big time.

Man, this kid knows his stuff.

Don't recall you ever saying that Watson ISN'T unselfish. You just said that he can't start, and shouldn't start ahead of Harris.

Basically, said he sucked and should never sniff the starting lineup. His early season success had everything to do with a home heavy schedule.

again **** watson.

the needs of the earl outweighs the need of the many.

his true colors have finally shown. thought he was unselfish and a great veteran precense a great chemistry guy
but boy where we wrong
