What's new

We Built it!

Mistype above, I meant the convention speaking slot rather than a nomination (this is what I get for doing multiple things at once.) I'm sure she's on the short list of best candidates for the GOP in her area.

As is, I guess the jury will be remain out on some time as to whether she's a model for others. I havent' researched the role models of the current crop of African - American GOP candidates. Do any of them cite JC Watts as a role model?

I thought about it some more, and nope, that's not it.
Good game.

For the record, as a Progressive, I'm all about the right of Christians (or Muslims, or Jews, or Hindus, or Sikhs) to believe whatever they want to believe. Where I and the rest of us have a problem is using the bible (or Qu'ran, or whatever) as an implement to beat down women, homosexuals, and facts that disagree with what their book states. But if you want to continually confuse defense with offense and be a hapless ***, again, that's your right.

The only way to be fair to all religions is to not favor any of them.

What implement do you use as a justification for calling people names and belittling them because you disagree with them?

That faith by it's very definition exists in the absence of facts and that using it as a reason to hold people down or knowledge back is a travesty. I edited my original post a few times because I don't think I exhibited great form, which you could afford to admit in your general appraisal of reality.

Wonderful deflection, by the way.

I couldn't help but notice Scat's description of Progressives. Looks like Scat has been listening to Glenn Beck', or the equivalent's, uniformed rantings on Progressives.

Let me adress them one by one:

American progressives hold these truths to be self-evident:
- All cultures and religions are equally meritorious (except for Christianity). Nope. Cultures and religions have both good and bad aspects and some are on the whole better than others. However, in saying this, we should acknowledge that our views are inevitably shaped to a degree by our culture and religion.

- There is no objective truth (until and unless progressives declare the truth): There are few objective truths, far fewer than some claim, but they do exist. One example, the value of the individual as an end in his/her own right and not as a means for someone else. Most 'truths,' however, are probably 'subjective' and a function of one's culture, religion, biases, etc.

- You cannot legislate morality (Therefore, everything is "moral" -- except Christian morality): Wrong. Laws are the very codification of morality. Anyone who makes this argument is clearly not thinking clearly.

- Progressives celebrate diversity and are tolerant, inclusive, and accepting of all fellow humans (except conservative, white and Christian people): BS. We Progressives are tolerant and accepting of conservatives, whites, and Christians. Many of our fellow progressives come from these ranks. What we don't like is conservative, white, christians imposing their narrow religious views, based to a large extent on a book of iron age fables, on the rest of society.

Being well educated and successful is not enough anymore?

I thought we'd wait and see whether people actually modeled her instead of deciding in advance whether she was someone others would model. That's why I was asking whether there's a group of African American GOP members who cite JC Watts today as he'd be the closest recent historical equivalent.

If she were to fail to win the election (and to be honest I have no idea what the polling looks like, she could be up by miles for all I know) I suspect she'll be relegated to sub-footnote status.

2. A model for minorities to show that you can think independently of the current conventional mindset

You learn some really interesting things from this board.
1. Minorities need to be shown how to think independently of the conventional mindset, as they apparently don't do this already, like all the good church-goers on this board.
2. Minorities can't tell when they are being taken advantage by hucksters who don't really represent their interests.
3. Minorities are perfectly happy to live in roach-filled neighborhoods full of violence and drugs, as long as they can get government support and don't have to work.
4..The people that repeat these things are not in any way tinged by racism. Nosiree, they genuinely all those sheepish, foolish, ignorant, lazy minorities.
So, how can they be expressing racism?

Al Sharpton attended two years of college and is highly successful. Jesse Jackson graduated and is highly successful. Is that enough to make them role models for your kids?

Media like the Deseret News in Utah is doing their best to try and unseat Matheson.

But early polling (granted, not very thorough) show that Matheson still leads... By a fairly significant margin.

One thing that should be mentioned is that this is after our legislature changed the boundaries to include more GOP areas in hopes of helping Love's chances. Even with that, she trails. LOL

She'll fail. I don't think Utah needs another nutcake like Lee sent to DC... If it weren't for the tea party money which flooded the state to destroy Bennett early on, he would have won his reelection too. Hatch learned from this and his supporters made sure he survived the caucus.

Matheson is pretty well liked around here since he's probably the lone moderate voice. While the GOP is trying desperately through ads and letters to tie Matheson to Obama, the reality is, Matheson isn't exactly the Rick Santorum "take one for the party guy." Matheson has never even attended the Demo Party Convention.

Let's see... Jackson sleeps around on his wife and Sharpton never apologizes when he makes a major mistake so I'm going to go with no.

What about Mike Lee? Is he a good example? He failed at finances and couldn't make pay his own mortgage. Maybe his family should have eaten out less? Bought fewer Iphones? Maybe a few less luxuries? Maybe his wife could have gotten a job?

And yet, this person is supposed to know what's best (financially) for our country?

Nope, not Mike Lee.
