What's new

We owe them one...

Can someone explain to me, after all the firings of GMs, etc, etc, the Blazers have come out once again on top of the Jazz (and we have arguably one of the best GM in KOC)?

PG - Lillard (vs Harris - advantage UTA)
SG - Matthews (vs Burks - advantage POR)
SF - Batum (vs Hayward - advantage EVEN)
PF - Aldridge (vs Favors - advantage EVEN)
C - Hibbert (vs Jefferson - advantage POR)

That team is scary and will beat us hands down for at least the next year.

Rep will be given to the best answer that doesn't involve "They just have more money" as we're all in even playing field with the new hard cap.

That team doesn't really scare me that much. I'll make them prove something on the court before I start kissing their ***.

I was under the impression that once Utah entered the offseason

Then the CBA would have to diferentiate between offseason and not, no? It seems to me the part you put in red disagrees with your interpretation rather than enforcing it. The key words being "same time". I don't see why it would matter if they clear cap space before the season or not. Space is space.

Another way to look at this is the Jazz wouldn't need an MLE, bi-annual, or TPE to acquire Mo if they cleared enough cap room to acquire him and another player. The functionality of the MLE becomes obsolete after cap space is released.

That's not actually the CBA, though, and there are other parts of this faq where Coon explains something in a way that is a bit misleading. It's quite possible that I was making an incorrect assumption, based on several pieces of information that may be somewhat misleading. It wouldn't be the first time. Right now, I can't really find anything that makes me certain either way.

A team can't act like it's under the cap and sign free agents using cap room, and then use their Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level and/or trade exceptions.

Teams have the option to renounce their exceptions in order to reclaim their cap room.

A rule of thumb is that a team may have either exceptions or cap room, but it can't have both at the same time.

I'm really tired right now, so you've got me doubting myself, but I'll try to go over the reasons I came to this conclusion. What I know for sure, is that teams can't use cap space, and then turn around and use a TPE. They have to renounce it first. So, since Utah didn't renounce their TPE, I don't think they have the option of claiming cap space now. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'd feel better if I(or anybody else) could find something that makes it a little more clear.

The Traded Player Exception and the signing exceptions (MLE, taxpayer MLE, and Bi-Annual Exception) are different from each other. Can't use the signing exceptions if you're under the cap because they're exceptions for being over the cap. The TPE always counts against the cap, so if the TPE is 10 million, and your salaries are 5 mil under, it's treated as if you're 5 mil over. If the TPE is 5 million, and you're 10 million under the cap, then the TPE no longer exists because it's potential money that let's a team act like it's under the cap for that amount of money for trade purposes, and if you're already under the cap more than the TPE allows for, you can make trades anyway, which cancels the TPE fully.
