Love DL and his vision for the team, but this + drafting Burke are his two big mistakes. If the Jazz had Hayward for two more years at under $20 million, there's an awful lot they could do to improve the team before these decisions had to be made. Plus, he'd have likely gotten the designated player extension after that deal. . . so it would have been 10 years of Gordon Hayward at lower costs than they'll pay to re-up him two years early.

Yeah, I strongly disagree with this.

Hayward didn't have a very good year leading into his RFA, and it was far from a given that somebody would throw a max at him. Not only that, but it was really iffy at the time as to whether or not Utah should even match that deal.

DL gets credit for making the right call on the match, and knowing what we knew then, you'd have to do it exactly the same way. You can't just max out everyone to avoid a situation like that. You gotta play the odds, and just because we lost on that bet, doesn't mean you should go against the odds next time around.
