Wesley Matthews - Blazers Fan Fest

I miss this guy. They drew 11,525 for their scrimmage.

"In his first appearance in a Blazers uniform in the Rose Garden, Wesley Matthews was the standout of the intrasquad scrimmage, scoring a game-high 17 points to help the White team to a 58-54 victory. He earned the game's MVP award.

Matthews, who built a reputation in Utah as a stellar defender, showed plenty of offensive versatility, shooting 7 for 11 from the floor, including 3 for 4 from three-point range".

LOL; who (if anybody) was guarding him? I still wonder how they'll use BOTH the 6'6" 211 Brandon Roy and 6'5" 220 Wesley Matthews. Both are undersized to play SF, although they could have some success with it. When the Lakers come to town, they'll struggle containing the Lakers length more than we do... I am still convinced they expected us to match that offer, then go after Fesenko, knowing we couldn't match BOTH...

This guy is going to blow up in the coming years. A rookie that played as efficiently and soundly as he did? Come on.

Whether or not they wanted Fesenko, I KNOW they expected us to match for Wesley. Matthews may get some time in a small line-up, but yeah, they're paying an awful lot for a guy to play 15 mins/per.

Why is it some Jazz fans have to bash former Jazz players when they leave especially one like Matthews? Keep telling yourselves that Matthews isn't good but it might come as a shock to some Jazz fans but there are other good players in the league. I wish Wes all the best and I am sorry we didn't keep him. He is a very good player and a hardworker and I expect him to be very successful.

If the Jazz can play with DW and Fisher why can't Portland play with Matthews and Roy.

I am with you in terms of wanting Matthews to succeed. But the comparison above is not valid. D-Will and Fish were a 1-2 combo while Matthews and Roy are a 2-3 since they still have Andre Miller. Don't forget they still have Batum, Fernandez, Babbitt, Elliot Williams and Bayless who all need minutes from the 2 and 3 spots. Like GlassEater said they are paying so much for a guy playing the position that they are stacked.

Love Matthews, but his growth will be stunted due to lack of playing time. Unfortunately he already blew up and because of his situation not much more he can do.

And don't forget what happened to the Jazz with Fisher playing the 2. Every decent PG in the league (and some that weren't) went off for 30-40 points against Utah.
Portland has great depth now. But who plays the 3 if Roy and Matthews are on the court together? And, why would you even want to go with that lineup when you have Batum and Babbitt?

I think Portland will be looking to make a trade, especially if Oden is hobbled again. I could even see them offering Matthews to Sacramento in exchange for Dalembert at the deadline.

I wouldn't call this bashing but Wes wont do what he did here anywhere else in the league. Feel free to bookmark this thread and make me feel like an idiot in 2-3 years if I'm wrong but I have a feeling that bookmark will be deleted in short order. He's a good kid, has good BBall IQ and some intangibles but we run pretty much the only system i can think of that rewards those principles. Wes benefited from easy baskets in a very structured system. He wont get that anywhere else..........if there's a phone bank nearby, page Shandon Anderson and ask him.

Matthews is purely a (nice) complementary piece. Portland's offense is trash (mostly isos with a drive-and-kick/dump option) and they get most of their looks because of Brandon Roy. Matthews isn't likely going to be playing much with him, so those looks aren't going to be so clean. Maybe Matthews is awesome and Portland finds a way to make it work, but I'm a lot more confident that Portland made the most ridiculous and stupid signing of the offseason (I love Wes and wish him the best, but his situation is like if the Jazz went out and spent $7 million a year on a pure PG not named Deron Williams, while also having multiple other really good options). It's not a coincidence that this happened immediately after they fired one of the best GMs in the entire league.

I sure do miss Mr. Nobody... But, at the same time, it will be an absolute miracle if he is able to come even close to the production he was achieving here any time soon.
