What is it? I can't get a great read on it. What is the least that the Jazz could get away with trading? What is the most they feasibly would consider?

Actually, I still think they highly value him. I don't know. I just want him back.

Jazz could have had him without trading an asset. Not going to trade one for him now.

And you know he averages 6.5 more points on 10% better shooting against the Jazz, right? Take those games away and he's even worse this year than he's been.

In fact, here's a fun little link.

He's a slightly more efficient C.J. Miles. I mean, look at those overall numbers. C.J. from last year to Matthews of this year.

I have a feeling Matthews will find his way back in Utah some day - but it won't be under his present contract.

Besides, to let Matthews go as an RFA, draft two lottery picks that play the same position as him and then make a trade to get him back? That sounds, I don't know - kinda stupid.

Doesn't matter - Burks and Hayward will both be better than Matthews anyway.

I think some of his inefficiency can be chalked up to the system in Portland. And, when you are comparing these players you have to emphasize how much better Wes can be on the defensive end.

But, in the final analysis, I'm not sure Wes is going to be worth his paycheck.... And, we sorta have a glut of 2s......

Jazz fans talking about Wesley Matthews coming back reminds me of a friend of mine who still talks about his ex-girlfriend and how much he loves her even though they have been broken up and haven't seen each other in over 7 years.

The Jazz could take him straight up because of our Memo trade exception. I doubt the Jazz are going to give Portland Sap or Jefferson to get a trade done. If the Blazers really just don't want Matthews, give them a future 1st rounder with a high protection, like top 20.

Are you speculating or did you hear Portland wants out of the Matthews contract?

i believe that wesley's stock has gone DOWN since we turned down that $32 million offer sheet. if we weren't willing to pay that kind of coin then, i don't know why would now when he has been playing worse this season.

that said, the worst part of the deal has already been paid so, like millsap, he's a cheaper player for the next three years than his cap hit would indicate.

I don't think Blazers fans really like anyone on their team right now.

I think Aldridge and Batum are what they consider to be their long term pieces. Looking at some Portland talk, there are a handful of fans that are avid "Free Luke Babbit" types.

I think they see Wes as a good player who is just going to get in the way of developing more talented prospects they get in this draft.

The Blazers have been incredibly unlucky with major injuries. Greg Oden and Brandon Roy could've been superstars. I suspect they went for Wes 'cause they knew Roy was a medical casualty waiting to happen. Neither Roy nor Mathews were near as effective at SF; kinda the same issue we have with Hayward now. Wes was unusually mature and developed very quickly, but appears to be at his peak. I'd take him for CJ in a heartbeat. But with Hayward so much more effective at SG and Burks who's no where near his peak, not sure how we'd use Wes if we did have him...

i was similarly inclined to feel bad for these guys... until i heard someone (can't remember who, but it was a national guy) as a guest on 1320 talk about portland did this to themselves. they had several doctors who counselled them against taking oden with the first overall pick, and doctors also warned them against brandon roy in 2006 when they traded for his draft rights.

they do seem fairly snake-bitten, but at what point do you realize that maybe your risk models are wrong and start blaming yourselves for your own bad luck?

for context, remember that durant was #2 that year that they picked oden. they already had roy and aldridge at that point, so just imagine for a second a team with aldridge, a healthy roy and kevin durant. they would have been an amazing team, and that might have even extended roy's career because he wouldn't have been the main focal point for all those years.
