Western conference semi-finals: Game 1 — Jazz @ Rockets 4/29/18 1:30 pm MST

Im encouraged by the 2nd half. I kept thinking they need to run Harden off the 3pt line and stop letting him do his little dance. Then they started doing it. Hopefully that is something Quin told them to do.

I also like that they started running more. We need to take it to them. Run, Run, Run, Run after your destiny.

We had a chance to get it down to a 7 point lead and then Joe Ingles took over and threw the ball away like 3-4 times in a row
They got desperate to chip away at it, stopped playing possession to possession, and started playing like they really wanted to get it within 10.

Dala, I disagree with you. The wide open style of the Rockets is perfect for Burks. Several of his drives he got fouled and they didn't call it. But he can get to the rim every time and this is something to take advantage of.
I agree with Dala. Burks was terrible in the 1st half of this game and he's not good at taking the ball to the rim because they don't have to worry about anything but his shot when he does.

I can't count how many times in the past few weeks that Exum has badly missed on those drives. Or he loses control of his dribble and turns the ball over. Dude has potential, but he needs to learn how to maintain his dribble and finish at the basket. I've been really disappointed him this season.

Actually exum played well at the end of the season. He has regressed in the playoffs.

Capela outplayed Rudy maybe a bit, but not as much as you seem to imply. They both really rely on guard play and Harden + CP3 as passers versus a Ricky-less Jazz backcourt is not really a fair matchup.
I think Rudy played terribly. He needs to go to the rim to get passes and there were rebounds he should've gotten that he didn't. We need to stay at home on both Paul and Harden and let them shoot mid-range shots or floaters. That's how we can beat these guys.

Ended up being a fun game. I think this made me more confident in my 5 game prediction.

1. Houston probably wont shoot that well on difficult 3's again. They may figure out how to get easier looks at some point, but I doubt they shoot that well on contested step-backs again.
2. The rebounding wasnt awful by any stretch, but the Jazz need a bigger rebounding advantage to win.
3. This series is way less physical. Exum and Crowder were able to play much better because of this. Easier looks and less body contact when dribbling. Everything against OKC felt like a wrestling match.
4. That being said, it's hard to see Crowder having a better offensive game than tonight.
5. Jazz cant turn it over 18 times and expect to be competitive. Jazz maybe had a legitimate run to put pressure on Houston, but they threw a lot of possessions away.
6. Royce O'Neale is going to be elite defensively one day. Great defense on Harden for most of his possessions on Harden.
7. Refs were on some ******** at times, but it wasnt as bad as I feared.

If we had a healthy Rubio I'd say 6 games, but I still think they can steal one in game 3 or 4.

Zach Lowe already had Royce as an honorable mention for his All-Defense picks I think, and based on how he played, he's already up there defensively, maybe already elite

Didn't think about less physical, but you're right, feels like a completely different sport to the OKC matchup.

I think a lot of the turnovers in the 2nd half happened because the Jazz were experimenting with running a lot more, and quite frankly, they just aren't used to it. Fast breaks just aren't as smooth as the Rockets ones. It'll get better, but its one reason why I don't want the Jazz to push the pace too fast - they just aren't as practiced in it. Might get them a game or two, but I can't see the Jazz winning 4/7 playing at a pace they aren't accustomed to.

One thing I'm scared of going forward is Eric Gordon. He won't shoot that badly again.

He was getting to the rim -- he should've gotten the call on at least a couple of those. Getting to the rim is very important because it causes switches, so it gives you chances to get the offensive rebound and put backs.

I wish they allowed local broadcasts in the 2nd round.

This.
I feel a lot better about our chances when I’m listening to boler.

That isnt why he is bad at the rim, but yeah. He wasnt great.

I said this in game chat, but I absolutely hated Burks game tonight. His 'attacking the rim' was always just jumping at the chest of the defender and hoping a shot opens up while he's in the air. No exit strategy if it didn't materialize. Nene was able to block him twice, think about how bad that strategy would be against Capela.

Burks got to the rim just fine to start the game, he just got blocked or missed hard layups because his body is too frail to displace defenders. Then he started hesitating and dancing around a bit, taking bad shots. I dont think he was that bad though. The Jazz need to play in transition a lot more, and he helps with that.

I'm completely discounting the first half and looking just at the second half, because I think that's where the game really started for Jazz. We got into passing lanes in the pick and roll, Rudy demanded the ball at the rim off switches.

But first half was very ugly, and Rudy looked very lost.

He also had 6 rebounds and 3 assist and ended up being a positive in teh +/-. He had bad shots, but he also didnt turn the ball over (which Exum is still doing)

I just don't like how he never gets past defenders, and only ever goes at the defender, whether they are in position or not. That just leads to high difficulty shots, and a prayer that the refs bail you out. Exum looks awkward as hell, but at least he uses his first step to get around defenders, or gets up to get free space above them. Bad as Exum is, I still prefer him over Burks.
