What could Jazz want/get for Gobert?

If we end up signing Kanter long-term, we pretty much have to trade Gobert at some point to get value back.

Kanter or Gobert have to go, both can't stay on future contracts. Too much money to pay to a 3 big rotation.

I doubt Favors is untouchable. We don't know what these players will be by the end of next season when the decision on Kanter has to be made, much less three seasons into the future when Gobert will need his pay raise. If we are only operating on the facts we know now, Gobert and Favors are the duo of redundance. Development may change this, though.

I think the FO has believed in Rudy from day one, and those Favors trade rumors were real (which is why it took them over a week to respond refuting them, just enough time for it to be clear no deal would be made). Gobert and Favors could work if the hype on Favors' improved passing is real, and if he can add a consistant jumper and more of a PF offensive game to his arsenal. As is, having two bigs whose only consistant offense is rolling to the basket is a nightmare for spacing and the style of offense Quin wants. It wouldn't matter how good their defense could be: we'd still have to put the ball through the hoop. Bad spacing on our part is like playing defense against ourselves.

This year is huge for Kanter. If he can stretch, adequately defend, and pass, it will be one of the other two who will be gone in a couple years time. If he can't do those things, then he'll be gone. I believe in the kid. I hope he gets his time (in a consistant rotation pattern) in the game, and offense to prove himself this year.

If Kanter develops the right way this year, he'll be extended, and then a starting pair of he and Gobert is a possability within two years. I've been saying this since we drafted Gobert.

Would it be possible to trade favors?

Favors' contract expires just as Gobert will come off his rookie deal, so the choice could very well be between Rudy and Derrick. I think Kanter will be shown the door after this season - maybe even a deadline deal...unless he shows he can defend and stretch the floor. Gobert is going to be the starting center within 3 years. Book it!

Incorrect, he'll need to get paid during Favors last year.

I don't see why we can't keep all three. They all should improve their weaknesses -- Gobert and Favors, offensively, and Kanter, defensively. You need three good big men. What a rotation that would be - each getting 30 minutes, depending on the situation, and how well they are playing that particular game.

0% chance Kanter gets extended this year.

You need 3 bigs that can play together. Yet to be seen at all with our bigs.

There is also the whole Andre Drummond FT shooting thing.

*I would sub in Collins or Ayon to basically only foul Drummond*

They would play 0 possessions of actual basketball other than fouling Drummond.

Yep. He matched up really well with the Gasol brothers and out hustled them all night.

He is still pretty raw defensively though, but I think he's DeAndre Jordan level in terms of talent already - the sky's the limit!!!

Called it!!!

Locke said in this morning tip-off that Gobert is DeAndre Jordan-esque.

So that the Jazz can go all-in on playing two bigs that don't have any offense and can't shoot a basketball at the same time?

Why everyone acts like Favors is anywhere close to untouchable is beyond me.

Yes, you are correct. But one year exceeding the tax threshold (if it comes to that) is no big deal. Jazz have shown they're willing to do that to retain players (e.g. Millsap). It's really the repeat offender penalty that kills teams. What it likely would mean is they wouldn't ALSO spend big to keep Ice Cold Trey. But that's ok, Exum better be the starter by 2017.

I think it really comes down to Favors vs. Kanter. Gobert is just way too valuable to let go.

This... I like Favors a lot, but all the advanced stats say he's an average defender. He doesn't have the length that Gobert does. Gobert has the biggest upside of all of our bigs. He'll never set the world on fire with his offense, but if he scores 10-12 points per on rolls and putbacks without having turnover problems he'll be fine on that end of the floor.

Defensively I think he'll be one of the more impactful big men in the league next year. He has all of the talent, physical gifts, and the drive to be great. I love Favors, but I don't think he's as driven as Gobert.

Also, you wouldn't trade Gobert right now, his value to us is greater than his value on the market. Let it play out... if Gobert becomes a defensive dynamo then move Favors. If Kanter can't shoot and improve... let him walk.

Especially given his salary of just over $1M. Given his offensive limitations, maybe he isn't a top-5 pick, but I'd say he's certainly playing like top-10. Looking ahead, DL may even decide to trade someone like Burks at the deadline just to preserve financial room in 2017. Of course, Hayward is also likely to opt out in 2017, so that opens up a big chunk of money.

I'm eerily in agreement on every point except the last: don't let assets turn into nothing. If the Jazz figure Kanter isn't in their plans, trade him to the highest bidder at the deadline (understanding that there's the possibility that the offers would be underwhelming).

I think the fanbase would be surprised at how little we'd get for Kanter. We could still sign and trade him because he is restricted and it would open up the number of suitors for him because teams without space could make offers. I think we need to approach this year as an experiment and see what the heck we have.

I'm really down on Kanter... I hope he is healthy and proves me wrong.

But I do agree... we can't get nothing out of the deal.

Yeah if I was offered a guaranteed top 5 pick for him next year I might consider it, but I don't think we'd get that kind of offer.

I'm just really bullish on him and think he'll likely have a bigger impact defensively than favors will... He has many of the tangibles I like in a player and all of the intangibles. I think fumbling the ball around is part of getting comfortable on the court which will come with playing time. He's looked amazing in FIBA and summer league (i know Kevin Murphy looks good there too). He needed more run last year and he's clearly worked his butt off this summer to make sure he gets it this year. If he becomes the player some of us think he can... you build your frontcourt around him.
