What's new

What do you guys think about all these Mars One trip people?

we aren't even remotely close...

And not only that, the progress of this world is a #'s game. It's not a coincidence that as more people started showing up, as we started getting more people to survive the birthing process in this world, innovation took off. It's the same reason that China is absolutely going to eat every other countries lunch in the world economically if they keep allowing more freedoms and stop killing their babies(which they taken some positive steps on recently). The more minds at work, the better.

Anyway, I only had beef with that on that one point as being a reason for going to Mars. I am all for space exploration. Though I think ultimately, it's a mirage. I don't believe in Aliens or anything like that. But I'm glad other people do because it will make them want to try and find them. I see space more as being a giant classroom; Knowledge base expands with further exploration, and as we push out a little more, technological advancement follows. Good things.

@pkm and duck: MAYBE overpopulation isn't a problem right now (though i think lots of people in india might disagree) but what about 1000 years from now? 1 million years from now?

This trip is a baby step for the chance that we have no choice but to change planets.
In fact, it is a guarantee that eventually we will no longer be able to live on this planet since all stars die out at some point. So it could be a good idea to explore the possibility of moving to a new neighborhood..... This might be just the first step.

@hack..... I agree that this first mission is going to have lots of problems, but I think that is obvious and expected, since it is in fact the first mission of its kind.
Baby steps, gotta start somewhere

the end of the human race, or its near-end, will be due to a nuclear nutjob, not overpop.

It depends on what you mean by that when you say we are not even remotely close. If we somehow learn to manage our resources better, and use better forms of energy, then I agree with you, that we have a lot more space to fill before we run out of resources. But if the whole world suddenly started using resources at the rate Americans guzzle them down, then we would have some huge problems.

I think people underestimate just how home sick you will get and mentally challenging it will be. NASA conducts all sorts of personality tests on their own astronauts before they send them anywhere.

Picture the feeling of Coster phobia but times 1000 and it will never go away. You will long for for the relaxation of earths atmosphere like you could never believe. The feeling of knowing there is no help coming. You are essentially on a suicide mission That will break people long before the conditions have a chance to take them.

Ask someone how they felt after they were lost in the mountains or desert for a few days. Let a lone 100's of thousands of miles away from life on another planet without suitable living conditions. I think the 6 month trip in a spaceship would break most people.

Nah, the cosmic rays would get them before the crazy would. People sailed across the Atlantic in tall ships under much worse conditions back in the day. Hell, you could hook half of those people to an xbox and as long as they had enough snacks, they could weather 6 months without batting an eye.

I think we can policy nuclear weapons well enough that I doubt they will be the end of us. Engineered super viruses pose a greater threat imo. You can't build a nuke in your basement and even if you could the effect would be localized to where ever you decided to detonate it.

What's with the one way ticket? It's only a 6-month trip and not like they couldn't make it a 10 year mission then swap and give others a chance to "serve".

I think after living on Mars for year or more your body would undergo irreversible changes due to different gravity. Doubt you would be able to live on Earth after that.

I imagine one of the early benefits of people actually living there will be for us to discover ways to make going back and fourth possible. As it stands it is a one way trip, but I imagine at some point it will be possible to return, they just can't say when.

Also, it's worth noting that they plan to send people up two at a time with additional launches each time the planets are close enough together for the shortest trip. Not one big ship with all the "winners".

I agree that the way technology is progressing it can happen. Maybe they will create some kind of isolated environment on Mars which will simulate conditions on Earth including gravity which would let folks to prepare their bodies for trip back. But doubt in next 50 or more years. So first few decades it for sure will be one way trip.

I dont disagree that your body will go through changes, but why would it be irreversible? If the body will adapt to Mars then why wouldn't it adapt to Earth?

I think problem will be that due to lower gravity your regular "Earth" muscles be atrophied to the point that it will be almost impossible to get them back to "Earth" like function. Even astronauts who spend few month in space undergo significant changes in their bodies and take special training and lots of time to be back to normal when they return to Earth. Those on Mars after few years? Forget it.

I know that your muscles would atrophy and you would even lose bone mass because the gravity on Mars is 62% lower than Earths. But if you are a healthy adult then its possible you could gain that back over time. Its still a little bit of a mystery just how much would be effected from Mars's lack of gravity.

I applied. I guess they don't want insurance guys on the Red Planet. It would be an honor that any man, woman, or child would be a fool to turn down, imo.

It gives me chills to think about, tbh.

The guy that comes on at the :30 mark my wife calls her boyfriend. We've watched a lot of his stuff about mars. He's bonkers for getting us there.

I'm very fascinated with Mars. It started when I read the Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson.

I also believe that learning to teraform Mars can help us learn how to manage Earth's environment for the better.

You knows whats dumb about Star Trek. Aliens are all pretty much the same size with the same bodies.

I think that all the Aliens would have to live on planets with the exact same amount of gravity for that to work. Different size planets would probably make different size beings and different shaped beings.

What if a planet was 100x the size of Earth. Wouldn't the gravity be so great that maybe life wouldn't even be able to develop or maybe life would just be be 100x bigger than Earths?.?

Things to ponder.

100x bigger or 100x smaller, hard to say. But we can see here on Earth that the colder the climate the larger the animal, in general.
