What if we matched on Wesley Matthews?

Obviously

Awesome
Good
Iffy
Fair
Decent
Bad
Atrocious

That seems like a good sliding scale, right?

Yep. That's about how I see it, and that puts KOC right smack in the middle/mediocre range. I tend to think that DL is in the good range (considering how well he's executed the tank and based on his first draft) with a chance to move up into awesome if the Jazz get a superstar out of the 2014 draft and Burke/Gobert continue to impress.

Truth be told, I'd switch the decent and iffy.

Thank you for lending scientific analysis to this discussion. Two thoughts:
1. That's a pretty tight window that KOC was apparently shooting into.
2. Decent is a pretty high floor.

Like others here I have high expectations for Lindsey. I'm not sure his shots will be grouped so tightly. My gut is telling me that things will ultimately go either really good... or really bad. A lot of that is going to be determined by 14 ping pong balls blowing around inside of a chaotic little chamber next May.

Truth be told, I'd switch the decent and iffy.

Fair enough. I'll amend my assessment to "decent at best and iffy at worst". Either way, the Jazz weren't ever going to get stuck out of the middle until after KOC moved on. I'm just thankful that he handed the reigns over to DL. I'm super impressed with how he's going about things. It's hard to suffer through a tank, but he's managed it perfectly. As long as he gets a better coach and a superstar he'll have a decent shot at actually competing in the near future.

You don't have to change it. I think we're just messing around with the semantics of it, although I do agree with your assessment other than that.

The goal is to get stuck out of the middle?

iffy is right on the fence between ok and bad. If you're lucky it will end ok if not it will end badly. Fair and decent mean pretty much the same thing to me so I would say they are redundant terms.

Decent analysis. I think that was a fair assessment

The right question to ask is "What if KOC offered Matthews a reasonable contract around January when he knew he had a good player but he hadn't yet exploded to earn its Portland offer". Would an undrafted FA accept a reasonable offer (that is not a low-ball)? Me thinks yes. I don't think this affects the Jerry-DWill feud as it was a battle of the egos, rather a function of poor roster. We get to keep a nice SG, RayRay-lookalike rides the pine and then gets traded. Now we have a pawn on the board.

Thanks Obama! /and KOC/

This is hard to dispute. Like heyhey said, fair and decent are similar in meaning. Iffy carries a more negative tone than either. Full ranking would be:

I think that you have to have seven classifications so that you have a midpoint to differentiate between good and bad.

Awesome
Good
Decent
Average
Iffy
Bad
Atrocious
