You'll note that I gave wiki as a general link and then posted several primary source quotes used in the wiki article rather than merely saying "wiki says this." In any event, you've advanced not a single claim that it's incorrect.

Wiki is entirely appropriate when cited just to give general background on a subject.

And you couldn't see the humor in it?

I rarely find lazy jokes that are 10+ years old to be funny. That "joke" was like listening to Jay Leno make cracks on Judge Ito in 2004. Sorry.

Kicky, now that I know a little more about you, I know you have the intelligence to do better than this. Your statement that I bolded above is just false, and you know it. Candidate Al Gore's exact words were . . . ." I took the initiative in creating the internet" in the context of describing his political involvement in the progressive agenda talkfests among politicians. He goes on to also say he took the initiative in a lot a measures to improve our economy, our environment, and so forth.

I agree with you that the conservatives taking it as claim as being the technical inventor of the internet is unfair, a bit overdone. Of course Al Gore was not claiming to be the technical computer nerd who did all the work in setting it up, and while I do not know exactly what role the political leadership he did take the initiatiave on really was, or how significant it was, it is fairly common of politicians on both sides to fluff up their importance in their campaign claims.

Even knowing the above, as long as progressives are willing to take down conservatives as mental midgets who just can't get over antiquated notions of human liberty, you shouldn't expect better.
 
Back when I was in HS there was no internet. You actually had to write your reports.
College was a breeze with copy and paste.

Yep I feel bad for you. Context says a lot. The thread said what is the internet. Gore said he created the internet. It is obvious that it has been rehashed again and again. The fact that you took it so seriously tells you that the joke is on you. The fact that the context and meaning of it had to be explained is what makes me feel sorry for you.

Back when I was in high school my power point presentations were made with a couple of magazines, a pair of scissors, paste, poster board and magic markers. Does the younger generation even know what magic markers are anymore?

It sounds like we agree, so I'm not certain what you think I've stated that is false.

The entire point in abstracting the quote from things he did that opened the door to the creation of computer networks to a straight "I invented it" is to demean real accomplishments by portraying him as someone who believes he did the technical work; which is a totally unfair interpretation.

It's worse than what happened to Palin with "I can see Russia from my house." At least that was presented as an obvious comedy bit on Saturday Night Live. The "invented the internet" was a fabrication designed to discount actual vision and work.

I thought the effort to justify his puffery was unsustainable as a "truth" in it's inference that he did not mean to take credit for either the "invention" or "creation" of the internet. I thought the internet was actually conceived by some computer geeks who would have done it whether Gore existed or not. I thought some of those geeks probably wrote letters to politicians more or less asking them not to get in their way. I thought Gore most likely wanted to harness the internet pony to some of his pet governance concepts, and I considered him dangerous to the freedom of the internet. . . .

You did a good job in pointing out his long- sustained interest in the internet. I also appreciated Vinyl's post referring to his contributions.

My original thinking did not survive the exchange unmodified by further information.
