What kind of backup/mentor to Burke is Lucas?

Lucas has no talent and will make no impact with the Jazz. Where did they find this guy? Seriously, they couldn't have taken some time and looked around the NBA to find someone better? Burke needs a guy that he can respect and look up to you and that guy is Tinsley not Lucas. Tinsley is not the most talented point guard but he was nothing but a true professional for the Jazz which management has no appreciation for (ex: DeMarre and Foye). It makes me sick to see a selfish jerk like Watson with a job in the NBA and Tinsley is left with nothing after offering to mentor Burke. Hayward and Favors must be seeing the Jazz management total lack of loyalty to their players and know they have no long term future with this team.

Lucas mentored D. Rose, and D. Rose credits him with turning his mentality into that of an All-Star.

I too liked Tinsley a lot, but we didn't owe him anything more than we gave him. Watson getting another gig wasn't on us. Demarre jumped ship as soon as he heard we were going w/ youth (plus he was an overrated gambler on defense who cut into Hayward's and Burks' minutes). Foye was and is of backup quality. He was misused last year, and doesn't fit the plan moving forward.

I think Hayward and Favors understand that the team was gutted for THEM, you know, so they could actually play. We didn't draft any of those players that you are crying over. They are not our children: they were just babysitters.

Good post. Repped.

Back in August, Lindsey said Lucas might not be a backup. Did this board already talk about that??? What the heck is that supposed to mean? Are you ready to watch Lucas start?

It looks to me that Lucas and Lindsey have been friends for over 20 years. This is a bit concerning to me. I hope he's not giving an old friend a shot.

P.S. Sexual Favors, great reply to this post. I think the Jazz finally cut guys at the appropriate time. I love what Tinsley and Carroll did for the Jazz, but there is no reason to overpay them. There is no promise they will do it next year. Usually the Jazz overpay players and keep them around longer than they are good. (Carroll might still be productive, but when the Jazz had him he was worth more than his contract, I'm not so sure that is the case anymore.)

Was there thought of bringing in a more established veteran point guard than John Lucas III to mentor Trey Burke and back him up?
Yeah, there were several alternatives at the backup point guard market, and, or I should say the point guard market. I’m not even gonna say John’s a backup at this stage. But a couple things went into the John Lucas decision.

One, coaches trust him at a very high level, as with Jeff Van Gundy, Tom Thibodeau. He had his best year two seasons ago with Thibs in Chicago, and as we brought John in, and talked to John about his experience with backing up Derrick Rose, and being part of serious programs, we just really felt comfortable with, you know, he was going to compete hard against all of our guards on a daily basis, but yet mentor them.

I think John’s want to be in the coaching profession post-career had something to do with the decision.

I think the structure of the contract and what we were able to do around the contract had a piece to do in our decision, that John and his agent worked within, you know, our parameters as we set forth. And so, it was multi-layered, like it always is.

But John and Ty[rone Corbin] sat together in Orlando [at the Summer League], and I think a couple things that John said really struck a nerve with Ty.

Carroll busted his butt for the Jazz. He did everything asked of him and went above and beyond this offseason. He was busy all summer doing Jazz outreach when he had no contract from the Jazz. I am sad to see him go but until I see some proof that he "jumped ship" I will go with the Jazz let him go. I have nothing but praise for Carroll and I hope he continues to be succesful.

Lindsey did a good job of getting a guy that has been around basketball a lot, but is not talented enough to take the starting gig from Burke if Burke does what he should do.
I also liked Tinsley, but Lindsey also had to make sure there was not a vet that Corbin would play over any of the young guns.

At this point I have no reasons not to trust the moves Lindsey/KOC have made. I think I see what they did by getting Lucas, and I trust they know what they are doing.

I have been thrilled with Lindsey this offseason. He put the Jazz into a win-win situation. My whole attitude about the FO changed when he took over this offseason.
