What Utah going to the Pac does to rivalries

I know some fans have said that Utah changing conferences is or could be the death of the BYU rivalry. They couldn't be more incorrect. Here is why...

The Utes are no longer trying to earn BCS stripes for the conference. This is pretty huge as far as the rivaly is concerned.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that found myself trying to force myself to root for BYU in out of conference games. Heck, I even found myself rooting for TCU late in the season because I wanted them to go undefeated- even though a couple losses would have meant the Utes won the conference.

Don't get me wrong, it was all head and not heart as far as rooting for BYU was concerned. For example, I was hoping BYU would beat Florida State for the sake of the conference. But when Florida State was taking care of business, my heart took over and started rooting for Florida State to score on every drive, and for a turnover on every BYU drive.

But make no mistake, I will NEVER root for BYU again. Now that I don't care about the MWC or their BCS aspirations, if I pay attention to BYU at all it will absolutely be to root against them. The only possible exception is if Utah is in contention for a national championship or something, and BYU is playing a team ahead of Utah in that race (or something like that).

The BCS was destroying this rivalry by forcing us to root for our rivals. Now that we are in a BCS conference, we don't have to worry about that anymore.

The rivalry that actually will get destroyed by this move is the budding TCU rivalry.

You may recall the Utes introduced their black uniforms during the TCU game a couple years ago. You may also recall TCU introduced their special use uniforms against the Utes last year (in front of the largest home crowd in TCU's history). This was turning into a great rivalry, between 2 great programs, and it will be dead in it's tracks if we stop playing them.

I would actually rather see the Utes play TCU every year than BYU. The Utas have got some pretty good players out of Texas recently and I would hate to see that go away. Plus, TCU fans don't live in some alternate reality and think they are a national powerhouse. Not that all BYU fans think that, but a lot of them certainly do.

I guess that doesn't matter though, because there is no way the Utes play TCU out of conference every year, especially if they don't play BYU.

Anyway, I'm sure most Ute fans will never root for BYU again, and BYU fans will never root for Utah again. So the rivalry will live on. Even if the teams stopped playing each other, and they will play each other every year, but even if they stopped, the rivalry would live in in all of our hearts.

Uh...hurray?

Good for you?

I'm not sure how to respond to this post.

I guess the only thing of relevance to me is that I guess you make a good point about the TCU thing, but I imagine that's because I don't mind rooting for TCU.

I find your attitude very narrow minded, ugly and selfish.

As a BYU fan why would I not root for Utah? They aren't in BYU's conference any longer and their winning games doesn't affect BYU. If anything, fans of both teams should be more likely to root for the "enemy" except for the one game that they play each other. If both BYU and Utah do well it looks good for the entire state. Why not have Utah in the Rose Bowl and BYU in the Orange Bowl and cheer for both. I think that would be awesome.

Haha, you actually rooted for the Y at some point? You call yourself a fan? Clearly, you're a typical homer bandwagoner.

Again, this changes absolutely nothing. I still hate Utah and their idiotic fans more than is really healthy. In my lifetime, I've never cheered for the Utes, nor will I.

But seriously, I'm glad you guys got your wish. I can't wait for you guys to struggle with new excuses for being mediocre.

If you don't hate Utah, then you probably weren't a part of the rivalry anyway. I think most BYU fans are more in line with what Max Hall said than what you just said. And most Utah fans feel the same way about BYU as Max Hall feels about Utah.

I guess the positive thing for me is that I can root for all Utah schools now to win their conference. Not sure I'll do that for BYU, though. Maybe I'll root for TCU to win the Mountain West...

Yeah, I found myself in the unfortunate position of hoping BYU won their out of conference games. It sucked, and I'm glad those days are over.

Anyway, your post is how I would expect most BYU fans to feel. You hate Utah, and you will always hate Utah. You will continue to root against Utah. And I am sure most Utah fans feel the same about BYU.

My point is basically the rivalry will live on. It's strong enough that even if the teams didn't play every year (which they will) it would still be a pretty strong rivalry.

I have been hearing lots of people say this move could be the end of the rivalry. I am of the opinion that if the rivalry changes at all, it will only get stronger because now nobody will be forced to hope the other teams wins their out of conference games.

Eh, I'm sure Utah fans would be thrilled to play an 0-12 BYU team. Would really help that SOS for the pollsters the next week.

#1: Utah will be playing BYU early in the season. The early games don't really matter.

#2: I don't think Utah will be worried about SOS. They are in a BCS conference so they will be going to a BCS game if they win the conference. If they go undefeated, they will likely be in the national champinship. Strength of schedule is a lot more important to the non BCS teams than it is to the BCS teams. That's why most BCS teams schedule nothing but softies out of conference.

This is what jealousy looks like. ^

Look at Utah's record against the Pac-10 the last 7 years. Not to mention our 2 BCS wins.

It also must sting to know that like 40 recruits have called Utah in the last 48 hours. Utah's recruiting will take a giant leap and probably put a dent in BYU's recruiting. Utah has arguably the best coach in the Pac-10.

Like, that's so like, probably like, you know, like an exaggeration or something.

I don't know how much it'll affect BYU recruiting, though. BYU is a bit unique in how it goes recruiting. I have difficulty seeing how Utah being in the PAC-10 changes that.

Any great local/regional players who might want to stay in the area will certainly want to go to Utah now, where in the past they might have gone with BYU. I think it might hurt a little, but I doubt many players nationally are likely to struggle with a decision between the two. Mormon players will either choose BYU or a different school, but that isn't any more likely to be Utah than anywhere else.

As far as the rivalry goes, I think Utah will continue to play BYU unless BYU beats them a couple of times. It won't ever be the same - but maybe a little less hatred will do the state good.

It may be an exaggeration, or it may not be. But Kyle Whittingham is th eone who said it, in this interview, at about the 1:13 mark:

I heard it on the AM radio, it must be true.

If you heard the Utes no nonsense head coach say it, then yes, it must be true.

If you hear some AM radio host say he thinks that is the case, there is room for doubt. But when Kyle Whittingham says it, that is about as accurate a source as you will find on how many recruits the Utes are talking to.

Are people really that naive to see why that wouldn't help recruiting?

Utah's pitch: Come here and play against USC,UCLA, Oregon, Cal. Chance to play in an automatic qualifying conference. Chance to play in the Rose Bowl/Natl Championship game. Games are on ABC/ESPN all the time. Even if they finish 4th you still play in a more prestigious bowl game than the LV Bowl. We have a much bigger budget to continually improve our facilities.

BYU: We have the honor code, We win our conference we go to the Las Vegas Bowl. Play against Wyo & New Mexico and SDSU. If we somehow luckily(hasn't happened in 25+ years) end up undefeated we might have a shot at a lesser BCS game. No shot at the Natl Championship.

What do you think most kids would take?

I choose BYU.
