What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

This would be a valid criticism except .... wait for it ... all those things are based in fact and actually worked. Reading a lengthy Esquire piece on the guy reveals that almost all of things in the film, including the AIDS fake-out, actually happened.

Must not have worked too well... dudes still in prison. Just saying. That said, the aids fake out was probably the best part of the movie albeit somewhat predictable. As soon as McGregor stated that he had been tested and was untouched I figured that it was some sort of ruse.

I sincerely hope you're kidding. For the record, it's this exact attitude that kept the movie from getting released for quite some time. Really sad.

Whether it is sad or not, it reflects the mood of the population at large regarding such matters. This movie is not just about gay characters, which I think are fairly well accepted nowadays. It includes quite graphic and over the top gay sex scenes which I think, for the most part, still creeps people out. I watched the entire movie but can admit that I winced more than once. The boat scene... just wow.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have rented it had I known a bit more on the subject matter. Here's the DVD description from Redbox:

Jim Carrey stars in the “outrageously funny” (ROLLING STONE) true story of a spectacularly charismatic con man’s journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal, who repeatedly finds himself in trouble with the law and on the lam – all in the name of love. Co-starring Ewan McGregor, I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is an unbelievably true comedy that’s being called “the best performance of Carrey’s career” (VILLAGE VOICE).

I guess I should have known as soon as I saw the word flamboyant. :p

And yes, "I Love You Phillip Morris" was one of my top 10 films of 2010.

This is not at all surprising. You seem to like material that makes you use your "gay matter".

****ing tight. See it.

And he ends up back in prison in the movie. It was your original position that everyone was stupid because they fell for his ruses. Now you're going back on the idea that they fell for his ruses because he's back in prison. Seems you're talking out of both sides of your mouth to say you didn't like the film.

Considering there was no frontal male nudity or any actual depiction of a sex act I think your description of these scenes as "graphic and over the top" is, well, over the top. Certainly no worse than would be expected in any R-rated love story regardless of gender. Clearly the issue is that it was two men. If those same scenes at the same level of intensity had involved a man and woman you wouldn't have batted an eye.

I'm just not a wincer. If you're not spending the entire film thinking about how disgusting being a homosexual is, it's actually a really good movie about some pretty atypical individuals.

EDIT: I'm not one to champion a movie just because it has gay characters or is about homosexuality. Case in point: I hated Brokeback Mountain because it was boring.

Also, I did think of one movie that did cause me to wince: Shortbus. Although that movie has long segments with pornography-level nudity and depictions of sex, although done without a hint of eroticism.

You're the one that said his ruses must have been good because everyone fell for them. I simply pointed out that they can't have been that good because he's still in prison.

When I said people were stupid I meant that the same people that he kept pulling the crap on over and over kept believing him. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Hence my wording, "...quite graphic and over the top gay sex scenes...". As far as my wording and your contention that there was no actual depiction of a sex act, your definition of depiction is vastly different than mine apparently. Carrey, buck naked, thrusting vigorously as he stands behind another man in the doggy postion, and that man is screaming, "**** me! **** me! *** in my ***!" left very little to the imagination. I won't bother posting Carrey's response at this point. Again, I think most of society is down with gay characters and gay relationships. It's just when you start showing/depicting what actually takes place in the bedroom that they get squeamish.

Actually, I didn't spend the whole film thinking about how disgusting being homosexual is. I only thought about it when they "depicted" it on the screen. I can think of at least three major "depictions" and another half a dozen crude references. You tend to think about what they are "depicting"/talking about while it is on the screen.

The bottom line, it simply wasn't that great of a movie. It was Catch Me If You Can on a small budget with gratuitous gay sex. Hey, if that's your thing. Have at it. It's not a movie that I'd ever recommend for a number of reasons, "depictions" of gay sex acts included.

I'm all for gay everything (especially lipstick lesbians), but I sure as hell don't want to see this movie. I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain either, nor will I. I just don't have any desire to see two guys punch each other in the fart box. Besides, I wouldn't be able to watch it without thinking that Ace Ventura was boning Obi Wan Kanobi. Not a pleasant thought.

You're good to watch it. Obi Wan only smokes Ace Ventura's pole. A couple of times. It's all good though as Obi Wan spits afterwards. There is no boning between these two "depicted" in the movie.

Man, that is an awesome signature.

That was seriously the best you could come up with? Might as well read "Trout is my bitch" as piss-poor as that is. It could have been fantastic! You dropped the ball on that one my friend.

Well, now I feel sheepish.

I'm open to suggestions, oh Master of the Funny/Cool sigs.
