What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

What's your favourite sports movie ever?

Mine's "Friday Night Lights" ... great score/music... so haunting... that scene when that RB went down to injury.. man that is one of the most horrifying moment in films for me.

Mighty Ducks......not even joking....love those movies. Rocky is up there. Remember the Titans. Hoop Dreams. I'm no movie buff though, hence my just getting around to Hoosiers. So I've got a lot to see.

Saw the night before last night. Lol'd quite a few times. Good Christmas flick if you don't get offended easily. (Lots of drugs, drinking, bad language, etc )

Coincidentally, this weekend, I re-watched:

Blade Runner (1982)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eogpIG53Cis

Let me tell you, I haven't seen this movie in over a decade but it still holds up. I consider it another Los Angeles movie with so much of it being filmed in Downtown. I always take joy in these types of movies as I try to pick out buildings and streets I'm familiar with. In Blade Runners case, it was also known storefronts as well.

Anyway, it's a top notch film with set design that set the bar for these types of apocalyptic movies.

89% on RT but should be much closer to that 100.

I watched another Criterion...

Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) (1959) | Criterion # 48

No trailer found but a good representative scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T1mN8_TIoQ

As some of you Greek mythology fans might guess, this movie is about the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. While it does take some liberties in the actual story, Orfeu Negro stays true to the central theme of musical divinity. In this case, the kids in the neighborhood believe that Orpheus has to play his guitar in order for the sun to rise every morning. And since, the movie is about music, what better place to film it than Brazil. Not only is the location important , but the time of year as well, as preparation for Carnaval is taking place throughout the movie which affords the movie an excuse to have rhythmic drums throughout.

The film is known for many things, not the least of them being that it was a co-production between three different countries, which is unheard of in today's time, it won the Palm at Cannes, it won an Oscar for best foreign language film, the soundtrack was by Mr. Jobim himself, etc. It's really a beautiful movie with a heavy pedigree.

88% on RT.

Extra credit:

Black Orpheus was cited by Jean-Michel Basquiat as one of his early musical influences, while Barack Obama notes in his memoir Dreams from My Father (1995) that it was his mother's favorite film.

Obama, however, didn't share his mother's preferences upon first watching the film during his first years at Columbia University: "I suddenly realized that the depiction of the childlike blacks I was now seeing on the screen, the reverse image of Conrad's dark savages, was what my mother had carried with her to Hawaii all those years before, a reflection of the simple fantasies that had been forbidden to a white, middle-class girl from Kansas, the promise of another life: warm, sensual, exotic, different."

I know some of you dudes are into the technical side of things, so here's an article on Tarantino's upcoming movie, The Hateful Eight, being shot in Panavision 70. THE will be released in two versions, the multiplex (35mm) version and the Road Show (70mm) version where the latter will have more footage.

I wonder how many theatres would be showing the 'Roadshow' version with the extended musical and intermission in the middle? Commercially not sure how viable that would be in today's scheduling ...

Not many, well, only those that are equipped to project 70mm. Thankfully, the Cinerama Dome here in LA will be one of them! The 70mm WILL be a limited release.

Damn it, I doubt that version makes it out here to NZ .. a real pity as I would really liked to see it in 70mm extra wide...

BTW Tarantino is just a machine isn't he? I thought he's semi retired when he joined Cannes' panel of judges,, but it seems he's still going strong!! Love it.

While not movies I have seen, yet, but the new Star Wars, Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War look awesome. Great trailer work.

I have extreme doubts Batman v Superman will be a good movie. Just too soon to use the Batman property. Everything is going to look subpar (at best) next to Nolan's Batman. Not to mention it's Zach Snyder who directed the last Superman movie, which was bad.

Ooh...I'm not "into the technical side of things" -- and I didn't really like Django Unchained -- but if I end up staying in Toronto over the holidays, I'll have to get tickets (I've found a location). If I end up out west, it's also showing in Seattle. Thanks for the heads up.

Can't wait for that captain America one.
Also excited for the superman Batman movie.

I think the star wars one will suck but I'm seeing it for free next Saturday thanks to my wifes employer so I will find out soon

It surely couldn't be any worse than the last 3 Lucas directed....

I got to see Inherent Vice on 70mm last year when I was in Hollywood for the Holidays. Hopefully I'm lucky again this year.
