What's new

What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

Can't wait for Godzilla in IMAX.

Speaking of action flicks - I'd HIGHLY recommend Dredd. It's on Netflix streaming. It's a shame Stallone made one several years earlier to tarnish the name. But it's awesome.

I already saw it and it was alright.

Whats with all the remake? Spidrrman and now Gozolla???

What is the point?

To make entertaining movies. Like the new rendition of the X-Men and Batman movies have been. Also enjoyed the fresh take on Predators in 2010.

There is no point. None whatsoever.

I just finished Searching For Sugar Man. Man, what an incredibly made documentary. I won't say more than that. If you get a chance, please watch it. DO NOT watch the trailer before you watch it. Greg, you're gonna dig this one.

Lyrics:

Woman please be gone
You've stayed here much too long
Don't you wish that you could cry
Don't you wish I would die

Seamy, seesaw kids
Childwoman on the skids
The dust will choke you blind
The lust will choke your mind

I kiss the floor, one kick no more
The pig and hose have set me free
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree

I kiss the floor, one kick no more
The pig and hose have set me free
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree

The inner city birthed me
The local pusher nursed me
Cousins make it on the street
They marry every trick they meet

A dime, a dollar they're all the same
When a man comes in to bust your game
The turnkey comes, his face a grin
Locks the cell I'm in again.

I kiss the floor, one kick no more
The pig and hose have set me free
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree
I've tasted Haight street's hanging tree...

Just finished Malcom X. I had never seen it.

The beginning was a little unfocused but from the 2nd act on it was an impeccable film. It followed Malcolm's tragic arc as best as one could expect. It solidified my understanding and respect of the man as well as the inspiration I draw from him.

A def must see. 91% on the RT meter.

Blue Ruin - A slow burn bloody intense revenge film. It was a little slow at parts, but there is a ton of tension and buildup. Pretty good, but not great.

Latest movies I have seen are:

Thor 2
Ronin 47
Predators
Little Mermaid
Ride Along

Littll Mermaid is the best of that group than Predators lol.

Looks so damn good. McConaughey has to be my favorite actor right now:

That does look really good

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. We loved it. It moves slower, humor is more subtle. Not the kind of movie you can just zone out with. To appreciate it you need to think about who Walter is and who he becomes, how his life changes over the course of the movie and what that can mean to your life and life in general. Some very funny moments but not your typical Ben Stiller film. He did a great job directing - the movie is visually stunning.

Just finished a few movies.

Well, this first one I finished a few months ago but I thought I'd mention it.

Gomorrah

Extremely well done movie about the slums of Italy and all the organized crime that goes on. Subtitled. A bunch of stories within a story, some connected, some not. My understanding is that Scorsese saw it and loved it though he had nothing to do with it regardless of the "Martin Scorsese Presents" title on the movie. At times it was hard to understand what was going on as I dont think the subtitles were exactly accurate. I read the Wikipedia after and it shed some light. 91% on the RT meter.

I watched My Left Foot for the first time. Started it last night and finished it this morning. Well, DDL, as per usual, killed it. Knocked it out of the proverbial park. What a jaw dropping job of complete immersion into a role. You could feel the angst and resonation of the character Christy Brown. The simple acts of movement you and I take for granted are filled with so much concentration and tension for someone suffering from cerebral palsy and this came across perfectly. The tension and electricity in the facial features, in the "idle" hands is palpable. 100% on the RT meter.

My_Left_Foot.jpg

I also watched Killer of Sheep. A film from 1977 that I learned about after watching Shabbazz Palaces' incredible "one shot" music video for Belhaven Meridian. That video was 4 years ago at least. My list of movies to watch is sometimes daunting.

[video=vimeo;10369494]https://vimeo.com/10369494

Killer of Sheep, I found out, has made it on many critic's lists as one of the top 100 films of all time. Fellini, Kubrick, Cassavetes are all mentioned when opinions are given on this very raw film. Neo-realism to say the least. Sound was pretty bad overall. The story was almost plotless and the movie at times seemed more documentary than traditional narrative. Filmed completely in Watts, LA, it's a good insight into what that impoverished area looked like in the late 70's. It was like almost "watching" a blues song. Also, soundtrack was impeccable and one of the reasons the movie was never released; no rights to the music used. Ebert gave it 4 out of 4 stars. You can read his review here. 97% on the RT meter.

Lastly, I don't know about you, but I always appreciate a good movie poster. All three of these are great in my opinion. There is sooooo much garbage out there, so when I see one that's interesting, it's hard not to give it it's props. Like recently I saw this one. I don't know anything about the movie but it's such a damn good poster. There's another version of the poster that has a border which I think is complete garbage.

Omg. Do you have a lot of posts like this in this thread? Cuz I'll be doing some digging in that case.

I plan on checking out all of your recommendations. Damn gurl.

Just finished "Enemy"

One of those you came away thinking "WTF did I just SAW????"

After reading a few "theories" online, however, it all seems to make sense... and the theme is very well suited for 30 something guys... I do recommend it only if you like deciphering plots, and themes, etc. If you like Mulholland Drive, for example, I would definitely give this one a try...

I watched a few movies the last couple of days...

I'm a huge fan of Michael Shannon's character on Boardwalk Empire, so I decided to look up Shannon's filmography. Coincidentally, I also recently finished Friendkin's memoir not too long ago and in it he obviously mentions Bug and Shannon, so I decided to give it a try.

O3ddzNt.jpg

Decent enough movie with some great acting by Shannon. Judd not so much. Camera work was good and had some subtle dramatic movements that I liked. Nothing to write home about, but it's a decent watch for Shannon alone.

I also came across an interesting though basic write up on the movie. It can be read here: https://voices.yahoo.com/a-complete-analysis-william-friedkins-bug-2006-7939042.html

61% on RT. Seems correct.

I also watched Guess's Who's Coming To Dinner?

K3xFbHs.jpg

Wow. I'm glad I got to see this movie now and not when I was a young tyke. I don't think I would have appreciated it's subtle nuances, the great acting and the content of the story. What an unbelievable movie, especially for it's time. The story is so, so simple but adds to the conundrum of the film in such a subtle way. While the movie did have it's corny parts, which is expected for it's time, overall, it was great. I learned that Spencer Tracy died a couple weeks after the film was wrapped. He did look ashen at times in the movie but I thought his performance was great. I also learned that Hepburn refused to see the movie as it was too painful for her after the passing of Tracy. Getting back to Tracy, there are some reviews that complain about his acting in this movie, but I thought he was solid. I thought he was just as he should be though I don't have a reference for him.

Anyway, if you surf around, a lot of people had issues with the movie but the complaints rang false with me.

A surprising 67% on RT. I thought it would have received a much higher rating.

I then saw Exit Through The Gift Shop

exit-through-the-gift-shop-20100402-142633.jpg

The Banksy produced documentary on Thierry Guetta. Some have called this a mockumentary and, I guess, a case can be made but I'm not so sure. Regardless, it was an entertaining film and made me hate even more the idea of hype with no substance. It's all around us.

96% on the RT meter...I think that's a little high.

Ok. Another couple into the annals...

Charlie Wilson's War.

large_zqAYxE2OzTVZDGavMcTxuWEhK3G.jpg

Gust Avrakotos. If that character doesn't make you miss the late Mr. Hoffman, I don't know which character will...well, maybe Scotty J. Anyway, solid movie, solid characters. It was over before I knew it.

82% on RT. I thought maybe it would be a little higher.

Sometimes, I make notes to watch something in the future because I read something that piqued my interest. Im not sure what piqued my interest at whatever time, so I have no idea why the **** I made a note to watch this movie.

Easy A

Was an easy blah!

easy-a-poster.jpg

As far as I can remember this is the first movie I've seen Emma Stone in and she's pretty forgettable. I think her acting is subpar at best. The story was recycled garbage and most of the other characters were whatever. Def don't recommend.

Im not sure how this received 85% on RT and 3.5 out of 4 stars from my boy Ebert. Archie will love this movie.

Ok, watched another three.

In order of viewing...

Irreversible (2002)

P3M6MzD.jpg

Well, I remember making a note of this film when I first heard about it. Mainly for the violence in the movie. The "rape scene" was talked about ad nasueum, as well as the fact that Monica Belucci's husband plays her boyfriend in the movie. If you have a queasy stomach and have an aversion to on screen violence, stay away from this movie. The subject matter is heavy and in addition to the violence, there's a lot of screen time of gay fetish bars for those of you that have issues with alternative lifestyles.

Camera work was superb but forcefully and purposefully disorienting. The sound alone at the beginning of the movie would make you go nuts. To be sure, if the first 15 minutes of this movie were looped, you could use it as torture fodder. Droning. Judas priest. I've read stories that a lot of folks were getting motion sickness in the theatre when this movie premiered.

Only a 57% on the RT meter, though I argue it should be much, much higher. Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars and deemed it unwatchable for many. His review can be found here: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/irreversible-2003

In a humorous change of pace, next in line was...

Cash Back (2006)

scse1fM.jpg

I think a friend suggested this movie to me. Meh. English movie with an interesting storyline but garbage all in all. This movie is the equivalent of a pop song.

46% on the RT meter though I would probably have rated it lower. For those who have an aversion to the human body, stay away...lots of nudity.

Haute Cuisine

BK6nyOT.jpg

Loved this flick...well, foodie film. What a beautiful movie! Beautifully shot and well lit. A great performance by the main actor, the absolutely beautiful and stunning Catherine Frot. Crush city. Not much happens in this movie, but it was still a joy to watch. Def reco.

68% on the RT meter. Seems about right.
