When did you get your first gun?

How many stories do you read about tragic accidents involving children and guns? I know, guns don't kill, irresponsible owners do. But seriously, if you're going to own a gun for protection against criminals breaking in, that gun will need to be loaded and quickly accessible. And how realistic is it to think that the FIRST thing you do in the morning is going to be locking up that gun?

I went absolutely BALLISTIC one summer (pun intended) when I learned my father-in-law kept a loaded gun in his nightstand. I simply refused to allow my daughter (who was 4 at the time) to visit unless/until he locked them up during our stay. He has grandchildren of various ages in/out of the house every summer (he owns a house on a delta). Any one of them could have found that gun. I'm still scared to death he'll "forget" to lock up the gun when my daughter and the other grandchildren visit. Not once has he ever had an intruder. But the odds are much greater one of the children is going to find a gun he "forgets" to properly store. All it takes is one time.

That's why you take a day and show your kids where it is, how to check if it's loaded, how to load it, how to handle it, and how to shoot it. Tell them that they are to NEVER touch it, and if/when they are older and do get a gun, NEVER point it at anyone. Education stops needless accidents, not hysteria.

I was born with my penis.

So why'd you decide to do away with it?

(Hope that's not too personal)

Did it away into yr mom.

This exchange was beautiful.

Anyhow, I got an air pellet gun (the kind that breaks where the barrel meets the stock) when I was 10 and it was a bird-killing machine. We had a mulberry tree in our back yard and needless to say, a virtual pet cemetery in the garden. I got a beautiful composite stock Berretta 12 gauge when I was 16. I killed many rabbits, pheasants, ducks, and doves with that sweet thing, but sold it to my brother ten years ago. I am just not really into guns these days, and the last few times I went small game hunting I really didn't enjoy the sport of killing for pleasure. There's something about a rabbit's whine that sounds too much like a small child to me... Haven't hunted since I sold my gun. Although I do enjoy shooting other peoples guns.

When I was a kid we would shoot Magpie's at my Grandpa's barn/fields with pellet guns. That was back before West Jordan became a thriving metropolis. Oh the memories that brings.

I don't hunt anymore either. Never really got that into it to start with. But I do love to go blow targets and clay pigeons apart.
