Closing lineup should be Don/Royce/Joe/Bojan/Rudy and anything else is just silly. If we find some other data points and a miracle lineup that is better in the course of the season, that's great, but that's not data we have right now and I simply do not see it happening. It is the only lineup we have that is solvent in every phase of the game and it's why it was arguably the BEST lineup in the entire league last regular season.
The Conley DM dynamic at the end of some games was awkward. DM kinda deferred a few times (especially in game 7) and I was always left asking why. Wasn’t sure if that was the gameplan or just some weird respect... but it needs to stop.

Agreed, but even if they work that out and everything within the realm of possibility goes well, it still creates a cascading defensive matchup issue. The starting and closing lineups are where such an issue is going to be most exploited and have the most severe consequences.

The only lineup Favors should be playing 4 is one where 1-3 have at least two competent off-the-dribble scorers, at least two good distributors. and sufficient athleticism to guard the perimeter (even if it comes at the expense of size). That lineup shouldn't close, and the bigs shouldn't expect much coming their way except what they eat off the glass.

Conley
Mitchell
Joe or Bojan
Favors
Gobert

But I would try to use that in the second trimester of quarters, not starting or closing.
The big-big lineup is also going to need to be used occasionally to matchup to the other team. I would anticipate one of the above lineups against the Lakers (which, hey, at least Mike matches up against Schroder).

Preaching to the choir... I do need Royce to play better defense than he did in the bubble though. Makes the argument a lot more sound.

It’s just funny how it always comes back to Mike. He’s not a bad player obviously but why we continue down this path is confusing. Hopefully he comes in and shoots the lights out. Outside of a lightening in a bottle scenario we are almost surely are a first or second round exit.

#2

One of the biggest issues I saw this past year was rebounding. And it wasn't Goberts fault. When he would contest a shot, none of our other players would help with the rebounding. I can remember a few games where a missed rebound or two caused unnecessary losses last year. And that is what Favors brings. It allows Gobert to attack knowing he has Favs back there to help rebound.

He was tired because he started defending. It was obvious, I didn't see much deferring from Mitchell, rightfully so btw, unless MPJ was guarding someone else(Smart thing to do).

Shaq the dark horse candidate to close.

He could be a rich man’s Royce. And he is CRITICAL to most of the Jazz’s most functional lineups.
Yeah, I do think he's got more offensive versatility to be a better option than Royce (not that they're mutually exclusive). I think people forget that outside of hitting a respectable percentage of fairly limited three point attempts, Royce really doesn't contribute anything offensively. 7.9 points per 36. Now I get that he doesn't necessarily need to and that he's a low usage guy, but having at least average offensive capabilities goes a long way. We say Shaq isn't skilled offensively, but only because he hasn't shown to be a great three point shooter. Take the three point shooting out of the equation and Shaq is quite well ahead of Royce on offense.

My preference to close would be our best lineup from last season, DM/Ingles/Bogey/Royce/Rudy. If Conley closes (which I suspect he will) I would probably go with Royce over Joe because Joe just doesn't play well when he shares the court with Conley. In certain matchups we might be able to close with Favors, especially against big teams like the Lakers.

Royce also passes up many open shots especially in the playoffs. Royce isn't a great guard or even wing defender though. He's better at guarding stronger players, hustling, and team defense. We really need someone better to guard wings. Hopefully he or Oni can be that guy and contribute on the other end. Even if on offense its just hitting open shots confidently and moving without the ball to try to get open for 3s and inside easy shots.

Shaq was was very bad offensively when he had a real role on a team. Whether it’s Royce, Oni, or Shaq, I think their best contribution is doing nothing so the more selfish players can be satisfied. Don’t think they’ll ever be a situation where there aren’t significantly better offensive players on the floor who we’ll want to run things through. We’ll see how his shooting is this year. It’s been bad at every level. College, G-League, NBA...it’s all been really bad.
