Who are our best spot-up shooters?

Our best spot-up shooters might surprise you. First off, unrelated to our shooters but JJ Redick is by FAR the best spot-up shooter. It's actually kind of insane, he scores 1.73 points per every spot-up possession. For comparison, number 2 is Steph Curry at 1.42 PPP.

Now onto the Jazz. This list is only players on our team who have used 50+ possessions for spot-up shooting
1. Joe Ingles 1.24 PPP (11th in the NBA)
2. Raul Neto 1.17 PPP
3. Alec Burks 1.13 PPP
T4. Gordon Hayward 1.05
T4. Rodney Hood 1.05
6. Trey Burke 0.94
7. Trey Lyles 0.88
8. Derrick Favors 0.69
9. Trevor Booker 0.64

Also I'll throw this in there, Jeff Teague is at 1.34 PPP on spot-ups, good for 5th

The Jazz as a team are tied for 5th in the league at 0.99 PPP on Spot-Ups. Only teams better are Warriors, Spurs, Cavs, Clippers and Jazz are tied with Blazers, Bulls, and Mavericks
 
Nice thread I was trying to find these stats a day or two ago because of our Covington conversation...where does Covington rank?
 
What percentage of possessions end in a spot up situation vs another situation?

How much does this affect the outcome of the games?

What is the difference between a spot up shot, and a shot with no dribbles?

Wow, Neto is the one that really surprises me. I must be watching the wrong games, because he always seems to miss wide open spot-up looks when I'm watching. (I've only watched about 50% of Jazz games this season.)

Percentage of possessions that are spot ups:
1. Joe Ingles - 41.4%
2. Trey Lyles - 38.6%
3. Raul Neto - 34.8%
4. Rodney Hood - 28.3%
5. Trey Burke - 24.8%
6. Alec Burks - 20.8%
7. Gordon Hayward - 19.4%
8. Trevor Booker - 14.6%
9. Derrick Favors - 11.5%

As a team, the Jazz use spot-up possessions more than anybody in the league at 22.7% of their possessions.

As far as affecting outcome of games, hard to say. But as you can see, the more efficient spot-up teams seems to be towards the top of the league. Also spot-ups seem like some of the most efficient possessions, behind transition baskets and cuts.

A spot-up possession is defined as "When the possession-ending event is a catch-and-shoot or catch-and-drive play." So doesn't necessarily have to be a catch-and-shoot, can be a catch-and-drive.

Which speaks a lot to the offense wouldn't you say? Neto may have been rotated off on purpose to start his career but these numbers suggest you don't want to let him spot up.

A catch-and-drive is a spot up? That probably explains Burks being third on the team in spot-up shooting percentage.

Right. Yes, points per spot-up, not percentage. My point was Burks is third probably because a spot-up includes catch and drive, which I didn't realize and seems weird. Burks either makes a basket or gets fouled on nearly every drive he makes, hence the high PPP. Pretty obvious that's what I meant when referencing the catch-and-drive, but hey, you keep acting superior.

I'm just teasin ya a bit

I'm really not sure what they mean by drive tbh. Does it include a dribble drive or just 2 steps? It seems like if it included dribble drives his percentage of possessions spot up would be higher. That's like his main thing.

You have to dribble if you drive but I agree I was trying to find out. The best I can think of is when a player drives on a "spot up" because the defender is closing out hard. Which Alec loves to do.

Actually every time someone had posted stats about burks catch and shoot numbers they have been very good

Huh.
Maybe it was catch and shoot threes?

I remember someone posting stats and they were much better than I expected.

Also since lyles is included these stats are from this year.

The posted stats I remember seeing were from previous years iirc

Yes it is from the current year. Also almost all Burks catch-and-shoot attempts are 3s so percentages are the same
