What's new

Who are the Dems going to run in 2020?

That is true, some put them into categories but even if you go off of pure lies with no shred of truth the numbers are the same. I am aware Trump supporters feel disenfranchised. I like some of the stuff from his 100 day memo. So far how is he doing at those things? What type of people is he putting into his cabinet? Are they people that are going to restore honesty, accountability and Change? Giuliani, Ben Carson, Palin... I guess we will see. He has made a lot of promises and made even more in his 100 day plan. I guess we can look back after 100 days in office and see what he has done. I hope he gets the first part done and fails miserably on building a wall and forcing Mexico to pay for it, I also hope he doesnt remove all of the positive executive orders Obama has done. I dont think releasing a memo of things you want to do makes you honest or dishonest, he has made some big promises and we will see what happens.

A worthwhile conversation. That's a rarity anymore. Let's do that.

What do you like about it and why?

I like the term limits. I think we would be better served by new people in many positions. New people seem more motivated. I understand it takes time to get things done and form relationships so I think it should not be a 2 term limit but it should be limited.

I like reducing the federal governments size. I want more transparency and less wasted money.

I like all of the stuff about lobbyists. It is very shady and has many troubling aspects the way it works now.

I am happy if we renegotiate NAFTA, it has its flaws and problems.

I like parts of the tax plan but mostly I am selfish and hope it benefits me.

What about you?

Term limits is a good one

I would be more for the hiring freeze if it did not "exempt military, public safety, and public health".

I don't think any of his proposals on lobbyists are going to change things for the better. I can see why he would propose a ban on government officials going on to lobby for foreign governments but I think it is simply fear based. The lobbyists backed by money is still going to have influence. I'm worried that this regulation is going to stop people who may be doing it on more humanitarian grounds.

I really don't think renegotiating NAFTA is a good thing and I'm bummed that TPP and TTIP are dead.

The devil is the details when it comes to tax cuts. I'll reserve my judgement.

I could get behind the Health Savings plan thing but again the devil is in the details.

Absolutely hate everything else.

So I support 1 thing wholeheartedly. Maybe 4 things to a lesser degree. Everything else I am definitely opposed to.

Why do you want term limits for military, public safety and public health? Do you think police should have set amount of time as police and military people to not make career out of their service?

I find it funny that so many people are in favor of term limits yet they vote their own officials in over and over.

Like we have no self-control and need our government to forbid us from voting for the same SOBs we did last time

And I also don't like term limits because if you get a really special person in office who is doing everything right you're going to have to let them go so that you can vote in some regular old politician.

I think the point of term limits is to do away with the "regular old politicians" entirely. Hard to be that when your time to run up your DC cred is limited. I have mixed feelings about term limits. I think career politicians generally reach a point where they are really out of touch with their constituencies, but most people will choose the devil they know over the devil they don't 9 times out of 10, so they just stick around. Also, with term limits it would really be only the people who want to do something who run since they know they can't milk it for 30 years or so, and I think a LOT of time is wasted on campaigning in general. But on the flip side it often takes years to build the right connections to get things done, and political experience can help get deals done, so it's a tough call.

The presidency is one office that I think we should really revamp. There is a real pattern of a first year trying desperately to appease the electorate they just lied to in order to get elected, then a final year doing almost nothing but campaigning, followed by another year of appeasing and a final year of campaigning for the next presidential hopeful in the party. I would like to see the presidency be a single term of 6 years. They would get more done, IMO, and would actually have some time to build some momentum without the interruption of campaigning so frequently. Maybe allow them to run for a 2nd term but only after another president has been in place at least one term.

I think primaries is the time to vote for a new candidate for most people. At the point where it comes down to Democrat and Republican most people will vote to keep their party in over voting for the other party. That is where term limits would get rid of the person that has been in for awhile and let you vote for your parties new person. I know not everyone fits into a party but most people in this country do.

Trump talks about term limits, but getting Congress to vote against their own interest isn't going to happen.

He says he doesn't like the lobbyist system but admitted on 60 Minutes than he has surrounded himself with them because they know how to get things done.

Term limit would be fantastic. A truly meaningful act by Trump. Unfortunately, it would require a constitutional amendment. So no chance of it happening, regardless of who controls congress.

So could someone explain to me:

1. How will the hiring freeze on the Feds work when he needs to locate and round up 2-3 million illegal immigrants? Does he think they'll just walk themselves to the border?

2. How does HSA really help those poor workers who are struggling to make ends meet in the first place?

3. How does renegotiating NAFTA help anything? For if you punish job creators or farmers, won't they just essentially take it out on workers or consumers? How exactly are we getting screwed in NAFTA? Our farmers are the ones making out like bandits, selling American corn and rice to most of Central America.

4. How do massive tax cuts for his class help improve wages for those workers in the rust belt that voted overwhelmingly for him?

5. One of his main concerns was the national debt. So who's going to pay for all of this free stuff? Walls/fences, massive deportations of millions, security, and tax cuts don't come for free.

I think all of this anti-lobbyist and preventing former congressmen from working as lobbyists legislation won't be enforced by a conservative Supreme Court. Remember, money is a form of free speech.

I'm seeing a new name pop up a bunch.

Keith Ellison, a congress man from Minnesota. Reid, Schumer, Sanders and others have all thrown support behind him or praised him publicly for the DNC chair job. He is a rising star to keep an eye on.

To me this all depends on how much pressure the R voting base puts on their states. Rs control 33 governorships and most state houses...

If Hillary decides to run again, she's got the best built-in slogan ever: "Hindsight is 2020!"

Some reports on this and polling I read, it's been a while, said basically that people think Congress sucks except for their guy.

Pretty standard armchair politicking. People are willing to overlook truly heinous traits in their guy while picking the tiniest nits they can find in the other guy as if they are Armageddon incarnate.

Without term limits, politicians are compelled to campaign from the day they run to the day they retire. It consumes most their time, and dictates what they say and how they vote.

Effective administrators being forced out after two terms or whatever is a minor consideration compared to the problems with the current system.

This is one of the most compelling arguments to me. I saw a stat once on what fraction on their time was spent campaigning, fund raising, etc, and while I don't remember the details I remember the percentage was staggering.
