Who is Excited About Trey?

If Burke continues to improve his weaknesses it could be interesting. Last season we were critical of the fact he couldn't dribble toward the basket and finish. And although he's not great at it he's improved a lot. He has the potential to be a good scorer - but he also needs to make his teammates better as well as play better defense.

As mentioned many times prior by me and others, Burke fools us all the time: we think he's turned the corner and then he plays like crap - then he plays well and is responsible for a win. He's like the J.R. Smith of point guards.

I think Burke has a higher ceiling than we saw last season - he just needs to be consistent and improve.

Any player taking more than a dozen shots a game will always have the potential to be a good scorer. The problem with Trey is that he simply can't stop shooting when his shots aren't dropping. I'm beginning to think that he needs a psychiatrist more than a coach.

Good point. I should have used a word like 'reliable' or 'efficient' instead of 'good'.

He has shown improvement, especially going to the basket, but still doesn't pass enough. And one thing you might notice is that when he's not shooting well, he shoots more and takes worse shots. That is a mental issue.
One play typified Burke last night. He had the ball for the ENTIRE shot clock. And it wasn't at the end of a quarter. He brought the ball across midcourt and simply kept dribbling while others were setting screens and making cuts. Never looked ONCE to pass the ball. And, of course, he was forced to launch up a bad shot as the clock was running out.

One of my funniest moments coaching 8-yr olds was having to yell "PASS THE BALL" once as one of my girls got that "deer in the headlights" look and just kept dribbling from side to side outside the 3 pt. line. But we're talking about some one with 2 years of college and almost 2 years of NBA experience. Not ONE player will be sad to see Trey go. I'm sure they get tired of trying to run the offense when they know that 75% of the time they won't be getting the ball.

I think we'll see another good driving game from Trey tonight. Denver is rejuvenated, but they still aren't a great team. Even if his improved driving is just the product of lesser competition, the boost to his confidence will be real. If he is always going to be a player who has a lot of FGA's, I'd prefer them to be efficient ones that help the team. If Trey, and all his physical limitations, can succeed at penetrating, it should be inspiration for Dante to attempt it with more ferocity.

5 for 12 against denver. 12 shots, 12 points. 4 asst 5 boards, 1 TO. All in all a decent game.

He is much better when he drives more when he wants to score. Seemed last night like he was trying to dish more or drive and pass. I hope he keeps it up, because it helps us win so much more than when he takes a bunch of jump shots.

Trey has really improved this year. Impressed by him. His shooting % is still a stroke. And he'll go 2 and 12 every once in a while. But he's developed whole new facets to his game, is working hard. Want to see him next season. Could be a very good backup pg during Dante's development.

I thought last night was another good showing. There were only a couple of questionable jumpers. He took some three's that he absolutely had to, but he still ended the night with above 40 fg% and 40% from three. 4 ast in 25 mins too.

Rhonda, if you're reading this, kiss your son.

The problem is that his good shooting nights are < 1/5 of his games. You make it sound like he's regularly putting up 20 on 7/10 shooting and the "rest" of us are harping in his occasional 5/13 outing. But the fact is 5/15 is pretty much his norm, with the occasional foray into 40%+ territory. If it's being a "hater" to look at the evidence and then ignore an outlier as anything other than that, an outlier, then I guess I'm closer to the hater's camp.

On his best nights, he is a top-15+- PG. On his worst nights, he is third string or D League.

I'm a broken record, been saying this since he was drafted. His ceiling is average starting PG, his downside is average backup PG. If he finds a way to be consistent he can have a role on the team at a reasonable price. Consistency is a combination of conditioning and mental.

Any player taking more than a dozen shots a game will always have the potential to be a good scorer.

His potential as a scorer has nothing to do with the number of shots he is taking and everything to do with the skills he occasionally shows.

Almost every player in the nba can show some occasional skills.
That's why they are in the nba

This is very true, but not all of those players are skilled at scoring or are a 22 year old in their second season either. But I get what both sides are trying to say.

I just take exception to what seems like the consensus on this board that Burke is tapped out on potential and just simply can't significantly better. His two biggest issues are those you consistently see the most improvements in with young players. Shooting and defense. I would say shot selection is third and that's something that's easily correctable and often times is impacted by a players teammates.

Good post.
Also, I was never a trey fan, even on the day we drafted him, and have been quite a trey hater often enough.

In the last few months (especially the last few weeks) I have seen improvement from him and that improvement has lighted a spark if hope in me.
