I didn't include Evans because I think it's pretty much set that he is going to make the roster.

Personally I think Gaines are going to get cut because we already have 3 PGs guaranteed, although he's playing better than Watson in the preseason. Unless Coach wants to play Price at the 2 for an extended period of time, Gaines might have to go somewhere else for an NBA gig.

The rest are all wing players but different type of players. Jeffers is like Ronnie Brewer who excels close to the basket but has no outside shots. Haven't been able to watch the games since they were not TV so don't know about his defense. Nichols is the most experienced of the 3 and best shooter. Thompson has not shown much but I like his potentials and all-around skills.

At the end my guess is Jeffers and Nichols stay but I personally want the Jazz to bet on Thompson's potential rather than a safe pick like Nichols.

Thoughts?

Thompson hasn't done ****, and we have struggled when he is on the floor, even with starters.

I wonder if we trade Price or Watson for a second round pick, and keep Gaines. Cant really say without actually seeing any of them play since the scrimm.

I voted for Jeffers and Nichols.

Jazz won't trade Watson. He came here to win. That would be pretty low for Jazz to trade him.
Might send bad message to other FAs interested in Jazz.

Thompson doesn't look ready to contribute. To the Dleague with him.

I really don't care for Jeffers that much, but he's not a bad end of the roster guy.
Gaines is gone. :-(

Surprised Thompson isn't playing well. Weren't there a couple other teams very interested in him?
Jazz must have given him some sort of guarantee to come to Jazz camp.

Sacramento also invited him, but he chose the Jazz. Probably because he thought he'd have a better chance and wanted to make it on his own instead of being known as Jason's little brother. Thompson probably has better overall potential than Jeffers. Not sure of Nichols' eligibility for a D-league assignment since he has already played parts of two seasons in the NBA. I'm guessing, though, that the Jazz use the new rule to assign Gaines and Nichols (if possible) to the Flash. The likelihood of those guys being signed by another team right away is slim. Jeffers and Thompson will make the team, with a final decision on who to keep/cut made at the deadline in January.

Has OJ's outside shot improved any during the summer?

Edit:

Here's a youtube highlight video I hadn't seen of him previously. This wasn't around last year, at least on the first date he signed:

It's going to come down defense and the ability to produce in the offense (not just score in it.) On game performance, that guy is clearly Jeffers. But who knows what's going on in practice. In any case, the 14th man won't have a guaranteed contract and will be sweating out his spot until January when he'll almost certainly be cut barring a trade.

Only chance Gaines makes it is Price is dealt. Don't see that happening so Gaines is toast, although he might wind up down in Orem.

We'll know more on Thompson later. And remember, he was not in our Summer league team;he was on Sacramento's.
Last season Matthews didn't give us a clue early-on in pre-season he was to become something special either. I have noticed Thompson is playing within the offensive system and hustling on Defense. Passing the ball around instead of jacking up a shot with every touch. Doesn't show up on the stat sheet, but his offense will come as he gets used to playing with his teammates, and they become familiar with his game.
I've heard Jeffers has added some catch-and-shoot moves to his offense this summer. He's considered a little undersized by Sloan, but definitely a hard worker on the court. If he's the choice over Thompson, I'm fine with it. We need a defender at SG besides Raja. And, I wouldn't be surprised to see more double PG lineups this season either...

Thompson looks pretty shaky right now. Gaines probably caught in numbers game unless the plan is to trade Price for some luxury tax relief. It would be a shame to lose Price though because if other teams go really small in the backcourt he is the one who can play D on the smaller players.

You're a smart man, NDY. Sloan used some 2 PG lineups with Maynor and Deron last year. And Williams actually said he didn't mind. It allowed him to be more of a scorer (which Deron likes) and took pressure off of him bringing the ball up the court every time.

Watson has averaged 20 mins/per in his career. I think Sloan would like to find around 15 for Earl. But Price has also "earned" time as well with his defense and high energy. So something has to give. I think we see some mins with either Price as a small off-guard, or Price plays some at the 1 and then Deron and Earl play together, with Williams sliding over to SG.
