Who would win between 2012 USA Men's Basketball & the original Dream Team 1992

Who would win in a battle of the Dream Teams?

This.

I picked 92 by a close one. But it is a toss up. I think people tend to glorify the past too much. Add that to the fact that a lot of people are just being haters when it comes to Lebron and some of these other guys.

I picked 92 because Jordan's talents would certainly translate to todays game. He still would be the best. Plus the 2012 team is thin up front. Not sure who is going to guard Malone.

Its close, but I give the edge to 92 because they were a little bit more team players. More hero ball going on in the 2012 team.

LOL!

Who's being a hater? I think everyone recognizes that Lebron could have played on that 92 team. Lebron is also the most talented player we've seen in decades (perhaps ever).

Durant could also play (probably wouldn't start over Jordan or Lebron) on that 92 team.

But Tyson Chandler? Griffin? Dwill?

Magic would have destroyed Dwill.

And to think that Stockton wouldn't have dismantled Dwill is forgetting how truly great Stockton was. Stockton was a great athlete in his own right. Was Dwill bigger? Sure. But so was 90 % of the NBA during his 20 year career. How often we saw Stockton take players, like Dwill, to the cleaners using that pick and roll, jumper, awkward layups, delayed dribble, and floater.

Fans today slurp up guys like Griffin, Rose, Westbrook, and Dwill cuz of their vertical jumps and highlight reel dunks. Every now and again they'll have a moment of destroying a defense. Meanwhile a guy like Nash or Stockton will (always) go unnoticed because they're too busy picking a part defenses all game long. If one had to make a highlight reel of how many times Nash or Stockton destroyed a defense it would literally be every play for the entire game. It would become redundant and boring.

Again, with the exception of Kobe, Lebron, and Durant, no one from this 2012 squad even makes that 92 squad. While everyone but Laettner would make and could start on this 2012 squad.

LOL @ the dumbass in this thread that talked about Barkley's height. Never mind that he was extremely athletic, tough, exceptionally strong, and had a jumper.

My how today's generation has so quickly forgotten how great Jordan, St. John, Malone, Magic, Barkley, etc were.

One other intangible, CLUTCH. At any point anyone on 92 could have taken over a game. Hit the big shot. If this 2012 team gets into a slug fest, who other than Kobe will be clutch?

One huge weakness in this 2012 team will be offensive execution in the half court. They don't have post players or 3 point bombers. The 92 team could have dumped it down low anytime they wanted, shot (and made) 3s, and could have created off the dribble.

This 2012 team will need to rely on generating turnovers and scoring in the break. Get them into a half court set and they're very vulnerable. Spain, Argentina, etc will park in a zone and watch the bricks fly. Hopefully our offense doesn't completely stall.

The place that the 92 team would absolutely decimate the 2012 team is at the 4 and 5. Malone, Barkley, Ewing and Robinson would humilate those pups.

Yeah, the current team doesn't have centers who can deal with Robinson/Ewing, and they don't have the physicality to deal with Malone/Barkley. I think the original Dream Team might actually have run plays too.

I think Durant would be able to step up. Also there are some players that would certainly try. I could see DWill and Rose stepping up as well.

It's already been established Rose isn't actually playing on this team.

Since when has anyone recovered from an ACL tear in 3 months?

Oh so we can assume that the 1992 team has their abilities and ages from 1992 magically restored to them today but not that the 2012 team is healthy. That seems fair...

I assumed that we were comparing the 92 team to the actual 2012 team. Not this make believe one with a healthy Griffin, Howard, and Rose.

I have to admire how full of crap you try to be. How many times have the players you just listed been listed as on the team in this thread...10? 15? If the above is what you are trying to argue then you may be in the wrong thread muchacho.

If you were compiling a best of team I think you'd get something like:

PG: Magic, Stockton, Paul
SG: Jordan, Wade
F: James, Bird, Pippen
PF: Malone, Barkley
C: Robinson, Howard

I think the only guys that would get replaced on the 92 team are Drexler, Mullin, Laettner, and Ewing.

Laettner I think we can all agree on. It's possible I'm underrating Mullin. If I recall correctly the guy was drilling insane 40 footers in 92.

Really, only Lebron makes it seem close in any real way. If you think of it as Lebron and Jordan effectively cancelling each other out then I think the marginal advantages for the 92 team are simply too overwhelming for the 2012 team to be reasonably competitive absent some intangible differences we're not accounting for.

Beyond the 92 team, I don't think the 2012 team could even take the 96 Olympic team largely because the 96 frontcourt was so dominating.

The 96 Team was:

PG: Stockton, Payton, Penny Hardaway (I know right, it's almost impossible to remember he was really good once)
SG: Reggie Miller, Mitch Richmond
SF: Grant Hill (in his beast mode days),Pippen
PF: Karl Malone, Barkley
C: Hakeem, Robinson, Shaq

Yes, Shaq was the third string Center

Actually, 1992 Larry Bird was replaceable, especially with Durant there to take his place. I still put Kobe on the team instead of Wade, too. I'm not sure I'd put Dwight Howard on the team over Patrick Ewing, either.

I'd agree with that. Durant would keep up that shooting in Birds abscence. Bird was limited with back injuries then anyways. Kobe seems much more durable than Wade. I'd take Ewing over Howard but that may just be nostalgia.

Just as many times as it has been refuted that those players aren't even playing.

Don't blame your own ignorance of Rose's injury on me.

By idiots like you trying to make this topic about something else. Fail Sir, Fail! I am aware of his injury as he missed the playoffs...not my fault you want to act like a complete tool and I am not going for it. If you want to start a different topic then make a scenario that is exactly what you want to talk about. Until then i will continue to show that you are being a tool.

Using your logic the 2012 team (even after injuries) would dominate the 1992 team because as Bird said they are all old and haven't played in 20 years...

Assuming the 2012 team was at full strength with Dwight Howard, Dwayne Wade, Griffin, Rose were all on the team & of course assuming the 92 team was somehow magically transformed back to their 1992 state.

2012
PG: Rose, Paul, DWill, Westbrook
G: Wade, Bryant,
F: James, Durant, Anthony
PF: Griffin, Love
C: Howard, Chandler

Would they beat the original Dream Team

PG: Magic, Stockton
G: Jordan, Drexler
F: Mullin, Pippen, Bird, Laetner
PF: Malone, Barkley
C: Robinson, Ewing

....heck, our 1998/99 Utah Jazz team with Stockton and Malone in their prime could beat this current dream team! More and better brains!
