Looks like no one will be cut because I suspect the Jazz will be able to get an injury exception if Dante is out long term, though I don't know the rules about this. Maybe someone who does can enlighten us.
 
So the issue to me is Joel has two years left on his deal. He won't play this year... Favs, Gobert, jerebko, JJ, in his way. Add in that Tony Bradley could eat up some playing time if there was a Favs or Gobert injury.

Royce can play wing and small ball four and is more ready to contribute. He is signed for three years and could contribute this year.

I think Joel had a higher ceiling but a low likelihood of reaching it. I think Royce could be a solid bargain for the next few years and has some Jae Crowder potential if it comes together for him.

Either guy could come back to haunt us... I just think Joel still needs some time.
 
The 'extra roster spot' concept was already proven wrong folks. We don't get 16 players on our roster because someone is injured for the year. We get $2.5 million in cap relief to sign an extra player but we would have to drop an existing roster spot to do so. So, signing O'Neal and Bolomboy would only happen if Neto were cut. That is less likely given the fact that he played the point admirably this offseason and he has even been trusted to start for us.

Everyone had written off Bolomboy over the summer but I thought that was crazy based on a handful of summer league games. He played well in the playoffs last year and looked poor in the summer league. Not a reason to cut a guy IMHO.

O'Neal is probably the odd man out. He has guaranteed money so he can't be too sorry and he knows we love him. If there is a trade that happens at any point during the season, I could see O'Neal being signed onto the team.

He will get signed by someone if released. Bobcats would be my guess with Batum out. He's a good prospect as a power wing who can shoot, pass, and handle the ball.

Royce also is not trade eligible. I could see a team being interested in Joel and us getting a second for him... maybe. At least we could trade him and not eat his salary.
 
Also, I think Griffin is a better prospect than Joel. He is more of a defensive presence and I believe in his 3 point shooting as much as Joel's. I love me some Eric Griffin doe.
 
The 'Bolomboy at the 5' approach hasn't worked very well. Joel seems closer to 6'8" than 6'9" and doesn't have great length or the heft to be a primary rim protector. I think he's mostly (if not exclusively) a 4 with both Udoh and Bradley on the roster.

Unless you're a cop or a relief pitcher, I'm not sure mustaches are all that highly regarded, but maybe I'm just saying that because it doesn't really work for me.

I agree with the article, especially if the Jazz think Bolomboy can legitimately challenge Jerebko in the rotation.

Behind the scenes, I also wonder about the status of Favors trade discussions. I see several teams offering him at least $90M this offseason, starting with the Bucks, who will be done with Greg Monroe.

The Favs situation is worth watching... I mean if the jazz brass are convinced Bolomboy is the truth would they trade Favs for peanuts. I really don't think so. If they think he will challenge jerebko for minutes then they are way higher than I am.

I couldn't think of a decent Favs trade though and I want in on the Favs comeback tour.
 
I don't think Bolomboy legitimately competes for time with Favors, but I think we're kidding ourselves if we don't think teams are going to offer real money to Favors this offseason -- Bucks, Knicks, Suns, Lakers, ... The Jazz have to be looking at trade offers for him. There's been almost zero talk of an extension for Favors last year or this year.

I like Favors, but he doesn't really fit, and he's going to go somewhere else for $90M or so. The Lakers have Brook Lopez expiring. The Bucks have Greg Monroe expiring. The Suns have some space and like him. The Cavs like him. Hornacek and the Knicks like him. I just think he's going to walk and try something new. Gobert is in his way here, both literally and figuratively. It's quickly becoming like the Kanter situation, except that Favors isn't a loud-mouth brat.

Then factor in the fact that Udoh does 70% or 80% of what Favors does, at least defensively, and the fact that the Jazz's best closing line-up has Joe Johnson at the 4 and Favors on the bench. The writing is all over the wall.

It becomes a tough question for DL though. Favors helps us possibly win a series if we get a good playoff matchup (e.g., 3 v. 6 or 4 v. 5), but we could trade him and possibly get a first-round pick that turns into a solid asset for 6 - 8 years.

So the Jazz keep Bolomboy or Royce O'Neale? What are the rumours?

Royce O'Neale seems a complete player, he could be a diamond in the rough.

It will be a tough decision.

I disagree here. He can't dribble or create. I think ideally the guy next to Rudy could handle and shoot. More of a power wing than a true four. Joe Johnson would be basically perfect if he was able to defend still.
