What's new

Why aint they no blues thread?

Tellya what, Blue...I spect you be knowwin Cream's cover of Crossroads, right? Compare that to these two versions: The first is Robert Johnson's orginal version, done back in 1937. The second is a somewhat "modernized" cover, with electric guitar, and stuff, done by Homesick James Williamson (Elmore Jame's cousin) in 1962, who has his own damn style. If ya thinks Cream's version is mo betta than them, well, then, ya just aint knowwin and likin da blues, I would hafta sez.

Well, with alla this here bad news comin down bout the Jazz and they free agents, what mo betta time fo a blues tune er two, I ax ya? This here first tune, from 1929, is by the legendary delta bluesmen Leroy Carr (piano) and Scrapper Blackwell who also done such classics as "Blues Before Sunrise," "How Long Blues," "East Saint Louis Blues," and "Midnight Hour Blues," all later covered by many later, includin by guys like Clapton. This particular toon is called "Straight Alky Blues." 30 years later, the same tune was done, Chicago-style, by the great lectric bottleneck-guitar playin J.B. Hutto, who called it "Too Much Alcohol." I done put in that version too, to kinda show how the delta country blues changed as it went north, and got more louder, and stuff, as times got more "modern," ya know? Afta dat, them theevin Limeys started stealin it.

Kinda goes without no kinda sayin, I knowz, but, they both ROCKS, eh!?

Well, it's been heavy on my mind, and I done decided that I just can't leave it be. Everybuddy and his brutha, from Brownie and Sonny, to da Rollin Stones, to Clapton and a million others has covered that tune, although Little Walter's cover is the best, I figure.

But even Little Walter leftz out one of Big Bill's best lines:

"I'm goin...to west Texas....

I'm goin down behind the sun....

Gunna ax da good Lawd...

What evil has I done?"

Anywaze, long-*** story, short: Here's Big Bill's original version, eh? It ROCKS!

Jimma

Jimmy Reed was a Mississippi boy who went up north when he was about 20 years old, first playin in the streets of Chicago, and later across the state line in Gary, Indiana. Jimmy played both harp and gittar and influenced his self a lotta peoples, too. Among the hundreds of artists who have recorded Reed’s songs are Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones, Ike & Tina Turner, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, and Aretha Franklin. Couple of his classics, here: "Baby, whatcha wants me to do," and "Big Boss Man," which I kinda included as a tribute to the mods here, ya know? Jimi Hendrix backed up Jimmy Reed as a sideman for a spell. That right there, all by it's own damn self, tells ya that Jimmy, he ROCKS, eh!?
