Why are the Jazz wasting a roster spot on Marvin Williams?

Exactly. Marvin is more of a running and moving player, but with big Al we just made him a spot up shooter.
I think what we're saying is that although it's a bad trade in a vacuum, it's not like it really means a damn thing. We still have a ton of cap space and it expires before it interferes with any extension. Who cares?

Care to enlighten us on why we're "handcuffed" with his $7M salary? Jazz are $20M+ under the MINIMUM that teams are "required" to spend. As often mentioned, being under carries no significant penalty, other than having to pay out bonuses at year end for the difference.
Marvin IS a decent player. His play is ENTIRELY the fault of Corbin and Jefferson. No SF had success with Al and Foye taking all the shots. No, Marvin doesn't have the value of a #3 pick, but I guarantee you he will be a good backup for many more years in the league.
As for not getting anything back for our FA's (and for Marvin), the Jazz FO Is getting EXACTLY what they want: cap space. KOC and Lindsey have emphasized REPEATEDLY that they expect bargains to be had at the deadline when teams faced with big luxury tax payments look to offload salaries. Might be a good veteran we pick up, might be a bad salary and a draft pick. But the last 2+ years have been spent looking forward to this day. KOC has skillfully unwound all the big contracts. AS for Marvin's money, it comes off the books when salary room has to be cleared to extend Hayward and Favors. I would not be surprised to see Lindsey get a lot of votes for top GM in 2 years (and part of the credit would be due KOC for laying out the groundwork).
Good. One less spot they can fill with a vet to steal the youth's time.

Burke needs to prove he can play in the NBA and not just handed the starting pg position.
What I mean by "handcuffed" is why didn't the Jazz have a say in whether he stays on this team or not this season? From what I read that decision was left up to him. The Jazz should never put themselves in a position where the player is holding all the cards.
The Jazz didn't. His player option was give to him in the contact he signed with the Hawks. The Hawks gave him that option the Jazz got it when they took on his contract from Atlanta

Hey, let's not be harsh. Maybe bkralj thought it was a team option. This board is big enough for everyone, from casual follower to hardcore NBA fanatic.
I've been a loyal follower of the Jazz for the last 17 years but I'm just not familiar with some of the contract terms since I haven't really paid attention to them in the past. So if Marvin chose not to play for the Jazz this year then he would become a free agent in the same way that AK did?

Correct. Marvin "Opted in" to his contract, or he will if he hasn't yet. He signed that deal with Atlanta and the Jazz assumed it when they traded for him. So it is not up to the Jazz whether he is on the team next year. They would have to trade him to unload his contract. Furthermore, his contract in no way hurts the Jazz right now as they are so far under the salary cap that it is irrelevant.

The Jazz are probably looking for more contracts similar to his with players that are not worth them in an attempt to get future picks or different players with value.

Right now with this team I disagree. This team has youth and they need to develop them. You don't take a top pick and sit them on the bench unless you have a far better answer already in place. It is why the last 2 years have been so frustrating to many fans. Favors, and Hayward should be entrenched as the starters and should be going on their 2nd or 3rdseason as such. Kanter should have been moved into the starting lineup last year. Burks should have been a 15-20 MPG bench player last year.

But since none of that happened and we now are going to be going with a youth movement of inexperienced players there is no reason that Burke can't be given every opportunity to see if he's a good fit for that spot.

I do think they should bring some competition in for him at that spot. But it should be a younger player on a shorter contract that could also become the fit with those other players. I hope they bring over Neto and Gobert to grow with the youth as well. Hell maybe Neto becomes the competition with a Veteran like Tinsley or preferably someone a little better and much younger than Tinsley.
