What's new

Why are the Jazz wasting a roster spot on Marvin Williams?

Correct. Marvin "Opted in" to his contract, or he will if he hasn't yet. He signed that deal with Atlanta and the Jazz assumed it when they traded for him. So it is not up to the Jazz whether he is on the team next year. They would have to trade him to unload his contract. Furthermore, his contract in no way hurts the Jazz right now as they are so far under the salary cap that it is irrelevant.
.
The Jazz are probably looking for more contracts similar to his with players that are not worth them in an attempt to get future picks or different players with value.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. It looks like AK47 "opted out" on the other hand cuz now he is on the free agent list not that the Jazz want him.

Yes AK had a similar option on his contract. He opted out, While Marvin opted in.

I would be extremely surprised/Pissed off if Watson is back with the team in any way.

Yes the Jazz will have to resign Tinsley too in order to lessen Watson's chances. Tinsley has been a true professional for the Jazz and proved that by reaching out to Burke and offering to mentor him not knowing if he was even returning so I would like him back in a limited role.

What? When the trade was made, Marvin wasn't "washed up", and I think most agreed it was a good gamble to trade Devin for Marvin, even with the extra year on his contract. Every team in the league allows injured players to sit out games.

When the trade was made Marvin was washed up and overpaid, and in addition he played the same position as Hayward, who was already better than him at the time and younger. The trade was a blunder from the moment it was made. Ironically the fact Marvin is now injured is actually better for the Jazz, because it allows Hayward to play more. So, this move was so horrible and idiotic even at the time, that the best thing that came out of that is Marvin getting injured, hence allowing opportunity for younger and already better players to play. In other words it is better to just throw out 8 mil in the garbage than have this waste of space on the roster taking away minutes from younger and more competent talent.

Hayward is a SG/SF but mostly a SG. Marvin is a SF/PF but mostly a SF. How is that the same position?
.
At the time of the trade it did not seem like a bad deal. I had high hopes for Marvin. It was really not a failed trade because I don't believe Harris was any better than Mo. And I don't believe the Mo deal happens if the ATL deal for Marvin was not already being set up.

Hayward is a SF, always has been, and played that position for the Jazz last year. There is no need to have a ridiculous debate that Marvin and Hayward are both SFs. The fact you had high hopes for Marvin just shows you have not been paying much attention to his career nor to Hayward. The problem is with Jazz brass preferring veterans to younger players, who have tons more potential and are already better than these veterans. Heck, even Deron Williams had to back up total scrubs in his first year, and not much has changed since with Hayward having to back up Marvin, who wasn't anywhere near as good as Hayward already, plus Hayward had lots more potential. The Jazz wasted CAP space and money in Marvin, and we are fortunate Marvin can't play, so Hayward and perhaps Burks will get more time. Now Jazz need to let Mo Williams contract off the books, so Burke can start and get some PT this year as well.

At the time of the trade, we were thin at SF. Marvin's "up side" and his two-year contract made him a good gamble. Marvin's defense wasn't bad last year and maybe playing with Mo, Al, and Foye screwed with his offensive game. I don't begrudge him being on the team for one more year; let's see what he can do without Al and Mo.

We may have been thin, but we had a young starter at SF position, who was already better than Marvin. We need a cheap veteran to back-up Hayward, and instead we invested 17 mil into a scrub while putting a better younger player on the bench and reducing his minutes from year before until very end of the year. That just wasn't a smart move. Why not just keep Harris, who was a solid PG, and let him expire, and have better flexibility and more time for better young players to develop? This was a mistake from the second it was made, not just in retrospect.

Hayward averaged 29 minutes a game last year; Marvin's minutes were not seriously impacting Hayward's playing time.

Blah.

Enough with excuses for Marvin. The dude sucks balls.

It was a bad trade. Atlanta traded him because he sucks. I'm glad he is hurt and won't be playing. Just sit out the whole year marvin

This is what Jazzfanz also said about Kirilenko. The SF position is not an easy place to play in the Jazz offense. Hopefully Big Al off of the team helps Wet Bandit out here.
